SEL 1 is a semester long program offered in both Fall and Spring Semesters for students of any year who are eager to develop and enhance their leadership skills. SEL 1 is comprised of 8 weekly sessions that cover such topics as The Social Change Model of Leadership, Leadership Style and Assessment, Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Assertiveness, Motivating Self and Others, Appreciating Differences, Next Steps, and Leadership Action Plan. On top of learning about these topics, participants have the opportunity to learn about themselves, where their potential lies, and how they want to grow and develop at The University of Scranton as well as in their future careers. Students often create new friendships with their classmates and find it easier to get involved in leadership positions on campus.
SEL Alumni have commented that this interactive experience is fun and has challenged them to grow. They made friends with the other leaders in class, learned a great deal about themselves; their strengths and potential and what areas they want to grow in. They enjoyed interacting and getting to know the workshop staff, the facilitator team and also the student facilitators who are SEL Alumni. There are no fees or costs to participating in the program.

Once students successfully complete SEL I, they are offered the opportunity to participate in a year long program called SEL II. The main focus of SEL II is advocacy and change, which is addressed through a plethora of topics. These topics include, but are not limited to, Change and Taking Initiative, Respecting Differences & Self-Awareness, Public Speaking, Strategic Planning, Effective Communication, and Civil Arguments & Taking Criticism. Once topics are completed, the class is split into different teams and charged with creating and completing a change project on campus. Past projects have been advocating for a smoking ban on campus, improvements to the first floor cafeteria, and increasing hours for the Wellness Center. The program meets every week and has a weekend long retreat in November. Through this program, participants create new friendships, learn vital skills for their positions on campus and the work-world, see how their skills from SEL I can be applied and used, and how to continue their growth as a leader.
Facilitation for SEL I and SEL II
Both SEL 1 & 2 are led by a workshop staff and student facilitation team. Staff members who are eager to work with students and to help them develop their skills volunteer to facilitate SEL 1, while the Director and Assistant Director of the Center for Student Engagement are responsible for leading SEL 2. Student facilitators are volunteer their time to lead either SEL 1 or SEL 2 (sometimes both!) depending on which program that they have completed. A student who has graduated from SEL 1 may facilitate the next class of SEL 1, but must complete SEL 2 in order to be eligible to facilitate SEL 2. Students that are given the opportunity to facilitate use the experience to use the skills they have acquired through the program and to develop them further. The student facilitation offers an opportunity for a mentor relationship with program participants.
