Mission and Goals

Mission

The Office of Multicultural Affairs seeks to cultivate an environment of multicultural competence and advocacy in which all members of the campus community are acknowledged, welcomed, and valued. This office is dedicated to honoring the Ignatian tradition of our institution as well as preparing the University of Scranton community to recognize and embrace the numerous cultural paradigms within our ever-evolving society.

Goals

The Office of Multicultural Affairs aims to empower the students, faculty and staff of the University of Scranton through the following services:

  • Opportunities to discuss issues of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, age, political preference, geography and physicality in healthy and intentional ways;
  • Cultural programming that focuses on the history, culture, achievements and contributions of underrepresented groups;
  • Resource library of African-American, Native American, Asian-Pacific and Latino-Hispanic American history, and educational resources such as books, magazines, DVDs, etc.;
  • Facilitation of academic and multicultural programs and workshops for faculty, staff and students which include: 
    • Knowledge, awareness, and skill central to understanding cultural uniqueness;
    • Self-assessment of multicultural competence and prejudices;
    • Self-reflection of intercultural communication styles and tendencies; and
    • Discussing social justice issues.
  • Provide a safe enclave for underrepresented students and provide social/emotional support for those students as they progress through the university community;
  • Provide and encourage effective advisement program for students and student organizations as needed;
  • Provide opportunities for students and organizations to develop leadership and other personal life skills, to sponsor appropriate programs;
  • Promote participation of students in leadership roles in campus governance organizations; and
  • Support initiatives dedicated to providing services to the local community and beyond.
