Service Opportunities for Fall 2012
Big Brothers Big Sisters: Ongoing, Mentor, be a friend to a child – go for walks, to
ballgames, shop, bake, play basketball – have fun! Flexible times and unlimited

Catherine McAuley Center: Child Care volunteers requested Tuesdays from 5 p.m.
to 7 p.m., minimum age 18. Contact: Judy Silver, 570-342-1342.
Geisinger Community Medical Center: Ongoing, information desk, days and times
vary, four volunteers. Ongoing, gift shop, days and times vary, five volunteers. Ongoing,
priority care, weekday mornings, time varies, three volunteers. Ongoing, family
companion, days and times vary, five volunteers. Ongoing, ICU waiting room, days vary,

Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center: Ongoing, assist with activities, Saturday or Sunday,
1:15-3:30 p.m., six volunteers. Ongoing, assist feeding, daily, any scheduled meal time,
ten volunteers. Ongoing, assist with evening activities, days vary, 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.
Ongoing, bowling pinsetter, Friday, 10-11:30 a.m., three volunteers. Ongoing, canteen

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter: Ongoing, dog walkers (must be 18 years old to walk
dogs) 12-4 p.m. Ongoing, cat food and cat litter drive organizers. Volunteers are also
needed to accompany dogs at weekend events. Contact: Beverly Bright, 570-585-0516.
Goodwill Good Guides Youth Mentoring Program: Ongoing, mentors, for
children ages 12-17 years old, to sign up for a one year commitment. Activities vary,
training and support provided. Contact: Jackie Timlin, 570-343-1166.
Head Start : Volunteer opportunities in the Head Start Centers include assisting
children with various educational activities such as reading stories, stringing beads,
puzzles, etc., helping prepare meals and/or snacks, setting tables, assisting children with
hand washing/teeth brushing routines, designing bulletin boards, cutting and laminating
art projects and organizing shelves and supply cabinets. Contact: Debbie Tomassoni,

Hospice of the Sacred Heart: Ongoing, clerical assistance, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., two
volunteers. Ongoing, patient visits, flexible times, unlimited volunteers. Ongoing,
transportation as needed, unlimited volunteers. Ongoing, telephone contact, weekly,

Jewish Community Center: Adult Senior Center – Volunteers needed to assist with
lunch Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Contact: Tim Lauffenburger, 570-346-6595,

Moses Taylor Hospital: Volunteers needed for Volunteer Office, Surgical Waiting
Room, Emergency Department, and other hospital departments. Volunteers also
needed for the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), an innovative model of healthcare
where volunteers (age 15 and older) are carefully trained to provide therapeutic
interventions at the bedside of elderly patients with the goals of preserving cognition

Northeast Regional Cancer Institute: Ongoing, assist with community education

Volunteers for PurpleLight at Nay Aug Park, Sept. 30, 4 to 7 p.m., four volunteers

Ongoing, House Volunteers, 9 a.m. to 5

Safe Trick or Treat: University of Scranton student volunteers needed Sunday October 28 from 12:30-3pm for on campus trick or treating in the residence halls. St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen: Soup kitchen volunteer, every Saturday and Sunday, 9
a.m. to 12:30 p.m., three volunteers. Clothing house volunteer, every Friday, 9:30 a.m.

Edward R. Leahy, Jr. Clinic for the Uninsured
Tasks: Volunteers perform secretarial work at the front desk and help with the paperwork for the patients. Students fluent in foreign languages may act as translators.
Location: In the Edward R. Leahy, Jr. Clinic for the Uninsured, located in the basement of McGurrin Hall
Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-6 (2 hour time slot)
Requirements: Volunteers must attend a training session (Tuesday, September 18th, at 7pm) and obtain child abuse and state police clearances. Those who wish to translate must be fluent in a foreign language.

Food Pantry and Clothing Closet
Tasks: Volunteers organize donations and assist families in getting the food and clothes
Location: In the Edward R. Leahy, Jr. Clinic for the Uninsured, located in the basement of McGurrin Hall
Times: Monday from 11-1 and Wednesday from 3-5 (1 hour time slot)
Requirements: Enthusiasm and a willingness to help those in need. No paperwork necessary.
