Administrative Telephone Service

The Office of Network Resources maintains the network wiring as well as more detailed information on the voice portion of the Network. Anyone needing detailed information on administrative telephone service should direct their questions to the Office of Network Resources at (570) 941-6181.

Student Telephone Service

Telephone service is offered as an option to students in University-owned housing and apartments surrounding the campus for those who prefer a land line.  For more information please contact the Office of Network Resources at (570) 941-6181.

Student Telephone Services Quick Reference Guide

(for those who contract for a telephone line)

  • University Information Operator:Dial 0
  • Verizon:Dial 9 + 0
  • AT&T Long Distance Operator:Dial 9 + 0 + 0
  • On-Campus Calls:Dial last four digits of Centrex Number
  • Local Calls:Dial 9 + seven-digit phone number
  • Toll-Free Calls:Dial 9 + 1 + toll free number
  • Long Distance Within The 570 Area Code:Dial 9 + seven-digit phone number Listen for three beeps, then dial tone Enter your five-digit authorization code
    Important note:
    While the University of Scranton offers discounted long distance service through AT&T to students who wish to subscribe, students are free to use the long distance carrier of their choice by way of calling card or credit card. Students may access other long distance carriers by dialing the carrier's access numbers. Contact your carrier for access number(s).
  • *All telephones must be touch-tone.
  • Call Waiting:While you are are on a call a beep indicates that another call is waiting. To answer the call, press and release the receiver button quickly. The first call will be put on hold and you will be connected to the second call. If you do not answer the second call, the caller will only hear a ring, not a busy signal. To return to the first call press and release the receiver button again. Switch back and forth between the two calls as often as you want. If you hear the beep tone and want to end the first call, hang up. The phone will ring for a second call.
    Note: If you do not want Call Waiting to notify you during a particular call or when using your fax or modem, use Tone Block.
  • Tone Block:To activate Tone Block before placing a call:
    1. Dial 70
    2. Listen for the dial tone
    3. Make your outgoing call
    To activate Tone Block during a conversation:
    1. Press and release the receiver button
    2. Wait for three short beeps and then dial tone
    3. Dial 70
    4. Return to your call
      Note:Tone Block is deactivated after you complete your call and hang up.
  • Three-Way Conference Call/Call Transfer:
    1. Press and release the receiver button or flash key
    2. Listen for three beeps and then dial tone
    3. Dial the third party number
    4. After the third party answers, press and release the receiver button or flash key to conduct the three-way conference call, or hang up to complete the transfer
  • Automatic Callback:When you encounter a busy number on campus; works for one busy number at a time.
    1. Press and release the receiver button or flash key
    2. Listen for three beeps and then dial tone
    3. Dial Automatic Feature activation code 65
    4. Listen for two beeps and hang up
    5. When busy station is free your telephone will ring three times to alert you.
    6. Lift handset and the system will dial the number for you
    7. To cancel Automatic Callback dial code 65 again
  • Distinctive Ringing:The Centrex system has automatic distinctive ringing on all lines
    • One long ring indicates an on-campus call
    • Two rings and a pause indicates a call from outside of campus
    • Three rings and a pause indicates Automatic Callback

Voice Mail User Guide

  • Voice Mail Access Number: (570) 941-5960
  • Your mailbox number is the same as your telephone number.
  • Your voice mail temporary passcode is 1111
  • The first time you call the voice mail access number you will be asked to personalize your voice mailbox. You will need to choose a new passcode and record your name.

Helpful Hints:

  • To change your greeting, name or passcode(s) press 9 for mailbox options and follow the voice instructions.
  • Entering your mailbox:
    1. Call 941-5960
    2. Enter your passcode

Special Keys:

  • The # (pound) key completes the current action and moves you to the next menu.
  • The 0 (zero) key provides information to assist you.
  • The * (star) key stops the current action and returns you to the previous menu or set of options. It is also the key you use to exit voice mail.
  • If you have any questions or need assistance please call the University operator at 0 (zero), or Network Services at 941-6181.

Telephone Repair and Information

  • If a problem arises with your service contact the Office of Network Resources at 941-6181.
  • 900 Type calls are restricted from all university telephone lines.
  • Student lines are restricted from making any operator assisted calls which would be billed back to the student telephone line (i.e. collect calls, person to person calls, and third party calls).

Harassing Phone Calls

If you are receiving harassing telephone calls you should report the problem to the department of Public Safety (extension 7888).
