Telephone Service

The University of Scranton offers optional Telephone/Voice Mail services to residence hall students as well as students residing in off-campus, private housing.

Centrex Service Features Voice Mail Features

The University offers Verizon's Centrex Service to students who choose to have a land line in University owned housing or apartments surrounding campus. Centrex Service utilizes leading edge technology in a flexible fashion to provide numerous advantages to faculty, students and administration. These advantages include:

  • Better features for less money than those available from private residential services.
  • Unlimited local calling.
  • Four-digit dialing to any members of the network.
  • Three-way Conference Calling.
  • Automatic Call Back when a busy condition is dialed.
  • Call Waiting availability.
  • Distinctive ringing capability which distinguishes calls from within The University of Scranton system and those from outside the system.
  • Caller ID (name only).

This Voice Mail component has been completely customized for the needs of The University. Our voice mail offering is feature rich, particularly in comparison with residential voice messaging service and private answering machines. Some of these features include:

  • An interrupted dial tone indication that will alert students that messages are in the mailbox.
  • Messages in the mailbox that can only be retrieved with the student's proper passcode.
  • The ability to reply to messages, save for later reference, copy and send to other mailboxes or delete after listening.
  • A date and time stamp that is available with each message.
  • Messages that can be retrieved from any touch tone phone.
Costs: $75.00 install plus $23.50/month

Agreement Terms and Contract Form

I request access to Student Centrex Telephone Service.

By submitting this agreement, I agree to the following:

  1. Installation: Verizon will install and activate my Centrex service within five working days of my application. I am responsible for any charges which are incurred due to physical modifications to the wire plant in my home or apartment (does not pertain to students living in University owned properties).

  2. Deposit and Terms: This agreement is from effective date of service until May 31st for the monthly line fee. A $75.00 install fee, will be billed on my first telephone statement and due in full by designated due date.

  3. Billing. I will receive a telephone statement from the Office of Network Resources on a monthly basis itemizing my telephone Charges. The total amount due reflected on the telephone statement is due and payable upon receipt. If payment has not been received within 10 days of the billing date on the telephone statement, I will be assessed 1.5% finance charge on the balance. It is my responsibility to notify the Office of Network Resources if I have not received my telephone statement.

  4. Non-Payment: Non-payment of Centrex/Voice Mail fee after 90 days will result in termination of service. If my Centrex/Voice Mail is terminated for non-payment, a $75 service charge and the balance due must be paid in full before my Centrex/Voice Mail service is reactivated. If payment is not received within 30 days of the billing date, my student account will be placed on HOLD. University policy states "No student shall be permitted to receive any degree, certificate, transcript of record until the account with the University has been satisfactorily settled."

  5. Returned Checks: If my check is returned from the bank due to insufficient funds, I understand that the amount of the returned check will be reapplied to my account and that a $20.00 service charge will be assessed to my account. If I do not pay for the returned check within five days from the date of the insufficient fund notice, I understand that my Centrex/Voice Mail service will be deactivated and will be subject to a reactivation charge of $75. The Office of Network Resources will not resubmit any returned checks.

  6. Third Party Charges. Any charges billed directly to my telephone number will become my responsibility and the charges will be added to my telephone account.
