Data Services

The University of Scranton is a Class B Internet site operating a large campus ethernet network. More than sixty buildings on campus are interconnected via fiber optic cable, which provides the infrastructure for three physically separate networks: IGNET, the campus administrative network; RESNET, the campus resident hall network, and ROYALNET, the campus security and debit card network. The campus backbone is a routed, switched Fast-ethernet environment with connection to the Internet via a 10Mbps DS3 circuit running SMDS protocol.

IGNET provides 10 Mbps and switched 10/100 Mbps twisted pair ethernet ports to all administrative and faculty offices, classrooms, meeting rooms and computer labs. This network routes TCP/IP and Novell IPX protocols and supports NetBIOS and DECNet to all workstations, enterprise and local servers, and destinations on the World Wide Web. A small wireless network exists in the library providing 3 Mbps connections to laptop PCs that are loaned out from the Circulation Desk.

RESNET provides 100% "port to pillow" Internet accessible ethernet connectivity to all on-campus and off-campus University owned housing. All on-campus housing has switched 10/100 Mbps ethernet ports available on a switched Fast-ethernet backbone. Off-campus housing at Linden Plaza connects to the backbone via 11Mbps wireless links. The remainder of off-campus housing is provided with a third party cable modem link to the Internet with 10 Mbps ethernet ports to each bed.

ROYALNET provides an isolated, secure data network for the campus-ID card system (RoyalCard). The RoyalCard provides security access to all on-campus dormitories as well as most academic and administrative buildings. In addition, Royalcard debit card capability supports point-of-sale devices located in the Book Store and Dining Services, the Meal Plan; as well as vending, laundry machines, and photocopy devices.
