Software Needed

Once you have purchased your laptop, you will want to think about the software that you plan on using during your time at Scranton.

Anti-Virus Software for PC and Mac is Required

ALL computers (PC and Mac) connecting to University resources, including wired, residential network (ResNet), and the wireless network (ROYALAIR) are REQUIRED to be protected with a University of Scranton approved anti-virus software installed and running at all times.  We highly recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (Free from www.microsoft.com/securityessentials) for PC owners, and Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition (free).

Microsoft Office 2010 (Win) or 2011 (Mac)   (Highly Recommended)

Microsoft Office is the standard application most heavily used across campus. Other applications are available on campus lab computes but can also be purchased for your laptop at educational discounts before and after arriving on campus.

The standard word processor, spreadsheet and presentation applications used on campus.
Office 2010: $80 through JourneyEd

Office 2011: $85 through JourneyEd

Note: OpenOffice, an open source office suite, is available for download for no charge.

Labs will have all of the other software that you will need. Some people find that they use some applications so heavily that they prefer to buy their own copy - that is something that you can decide at any time.
