Internet2 operates over an exclusive 10 gigabit fiber network across the country and offers faster speeds than the commodity Internet because of the higher bandwidth and lower traffic. Northeast Pennsylvania organization desiring Internet2 connectivity can obtain bandwidth ranging from 5 megabits per second to 100 megabits per second over a dedicated fiber connection to The University of Scranton

There are specific network hardware requirements to connect, but the connection is transparent to the end user once this hardware in in place. The Internet2 infrastructure will connect the user to other U.S. sites that are on Internet2, or to one of the over 45 international research and education networks that will interconnect with Internet2.
