      Alumni Medical Mission to Haiti

      Three alumni doctors and three students journeyed to Haiti on the Medical Alumni Council’s annual medical mission. Once again, the team worked with Fr. Rick Frechette, C.P. H’07, St. Damian’s Hospital Director, doctor and priest.

      Led by Hartford, Conn., maxillofacial surgeon Richard Bevilacqua, D.M.D., M.D. ’83, the team spent one week providing much needed medical care to the underserved people of Haiti. Pamela Taffera, D.O. ’02, Chris Andres, M.D. ’89 and University students Kathleen Lavelle ’12, Mike Le ’12 and Lucie Henry ’12 joined Dr. Bevilacqua on the mission.

      Scranton Alumni Tour Begins Feb. 28

      Starting with an evening reception in San Francisco, the Scranton Alumni Tour features five alumni gatherings beginning on Feb. 28, and ending on March 4. University staff will be traveling to California and Florida meeting with alumni, parents and friends. A highlight of the trip will be a brunch in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with University President Kevin P. Quinn, S.J. To view all of the tour details, click here.       Three Special Constituent Groups to Reconnect at Reunion 2012

      Three special constituent groups will gather to reconnect during Reunion 2012. On Saturday morning, June 9, nursing alumni will have an opportunity to reconnect with each other and members of the Nursing Department.  SJLA alumni will reminisce about their experiences as students. Alumni of the Band and Singers program will spend time “Hangin’ out in Houlihan” with Cheryl Boga. Alumni can register for these events along with other reunion events at www.scranton.edu/reunion in mid-March.

      Bart Billings, Ph.D.’66, Carlsbad, Calif., is the owner of Joey’s Smokin BBQ & Doc’s Saloon. The restaurant has been selected as an award finalist in the 2011 Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards, for the Small Business of the Year Award.

      John Zonarich ’68, Mechanicsburg, managing attorney of the firm SkarlatosZonarich, has been licensed to practice law in West Virginia by the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.

      Col. Mark Volk, USA, Ret. ’77, Dalton, has been selected as the 8th president of Lackawanna College by the Board of Trustees.

      Kathleen Fitzgerald Sherman ’78, Mountain, Calif., was admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

      James Murphy ’80, Irving, Texas, is the vice president of Global Security for Kimberly-Clark Corporation.

      William Trently, .D.M.D. ’82, Stratham, N.H. has published his second book “Snapshot: Ship’s Dentists.”

      Michael Burke ’85, Pacific Palisades, Calif., was appointed president of AECOM Technology Corporation, a Fortune 500 architecture and engineering company with 45,000 employees in 125 countries headquartered in Los Angeles.

      Paul Gerst ’87, Dallas, Texas, is author of the book “Your Great Grandmother Made better Tea.” The book is a collection of iced tea, punch and tea dessert recipes from 1890-1920. Paul is the founder of teadog.com, an ecommerce tea retailer.

      Thomas Archer ’90, Camp Hill, has joined the firm Mette, Evans & Woodside as a shareholder. He will focus his practice in the Litigation, Business Law and Employment practice areas.

      Jeffrey Kingsley, D.O. ’96, Ellerslie, Ga., has been elected to serve as a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) Board of Trustees. ACRP is a global association comprised of more than 18,000 individuals in over 71 countries dedicated to providing global leadership to promote integrity and excellence for the clinical research profession.

      Bernadette Royce ’96, Garden City, N.Y., is the Health and Safety program manager/grant director for the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York, International Association of Firefighters Local 94.

      Gary Sinzdak ’96 is currently serving as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for the 2011-2012 term. He received his law degree from the Boalt School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.

      Daniel Zazzali ’98, Ports Monmouth, N.J., was elected a partner to the firm McCarter & English LLP. He is a member of the Tax and Benefits team, where he concentrates his practice in the area of local property taxation and has helped prosecute complex property tax appeals in various states.

      Peter Castagna ’03, Chester Springs, completed his MBA at Wilmington University in 2011 and began working at Widener University Law School as assistant director, Widener Law Fund.

      Maria Villafuerte, D.O. ’03, Royal Oak, Mich., is staff psychiatrist at Henry Ford Kingswood Hospital and works in the inpatient adult psychiatric unit teaching both psychiatric residents and medical students.

      Patrick McManus ’07, Garden City, N.Y., is pursuing his MSED at CUNY Queens College.
