Celebrate Black History Month at Rutgers University Feb. 18

Former Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders is the keynote speaker at the the 32nd annual Marion Thompson Wright Lecture Series on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Rutgers University. The University of Scranton's Office of Equity and Diversity is sponsoring a free bus trip to the conference for all University members.
Dr. William Owen will follow with comments and lecture: “My Genetic Code or my Zip Code: Which Is More Important?”
Afternoon speakers include:
- Dr. Sharla Fett, associate professor of History, Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif., to present: "You Just Had to Depend on Yourself’: Self-Reliance and the Healing Work of Enslaved Women on U.S. Antebellum Plantations"
- Dr. Dorothy Roberts, Kirkland & Ellis Professor, Northwestern University School of Law, Chicago, Ill., to present: "Fatal Invention: The New Biopolitics of Race and Health"
This conference is of special interest to students and faculty in nursing, pre-med and health administration. The bus will leave from the area in front of St. Thomas Hall at 6:45 a.m. Reservations for this trip can be made by contacting OED at diversity@scranton.edu or call 570-941-6645. A $20 deposit is required at the time of reservation. This deposit will be refunded upon boarding the bus for departure from Scranton. Any unclaimed deposits will be donated to the United Way campaign.
