Strong Gets Shot At NCAA Record Wednesday
Head coach Mike Strong will take aim at the NCAA Division III women’s basketball all-time victories record on Wednesday night (Dec. 7) when The University of Scranton women’s basketball team hosts Messiah College at 6 p.m. in the Long Center.
Strong currently has 757 wins, tied with former St. John Fisher College head coach Phil Kahler, who retired in 2008. Strong tied the mark on Saturday, Dec. 3, when the Lady Royals defeated Moravian, 69-55, in the Long Center.
In his 32nd season as the head coach at Scranton, Strong has a career record of 757-162 for a winning percentage of .824, which is the fifth-best winning percentage all-time in NCAA Division III and 10th-best among all divisions.
The Lady Royals (3-3, 1-0 Landmark Conference) enter on a two-game winning streak after defeating Marywood, 82-75, on Wednesday, Nov. 30, before the win over Moravian. Sophomore guard Alison Sweeney (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) currently leads the Landmark Conference with 18.0 points per game. Junior forward Erin Boggan (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) is second on the team with 12.0 points per game while leading the squad with 9.3 rebounds per contest.
Following the women’s game, the University of Scranton men’s basketball team will host Kean University at 8 p.m. The Royals are coming off a 78-74 overtime victory against Moravian on Saturday, Dec. 3, in the Long Center. Scranton placed five players in double figures in the win, led by sophomore guard Tommy Morgan (Greenlawn, N.Y./Chaminade) with 17.
The Royals (3-2, 1-0 Landmark Conference) currently have three players averaging double figures on the season. Junior guard Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) leads the way with 16.6 points per game, followed by freshman guard Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) with 12.8 and senior forward Luke Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) with 12.5.
Tickets for Wednesday's doubleheader are $5 for adults (ages 18-61) and $3 for senior citizens and children ages 8-17. All University of Scranton students and children, ages seven and under accompanied by an adult, will be admitted free.
