Turkey Bowl to Benefit Thanksgiving Food Drive

Mark your calendars for the Turkey Bowl Flag Football Tournament! Get together a co-ed flag football team for Saturday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 6 p.m. for a tournament to raise money for the eighth annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Each team should have 7-10 players. The tournament will be held at Fitzpatrick Field. The cost is $3 per person. Pick up forms in the Community Outreach Office, second floor of DeNaples Center and return them by Friday, Nov. 4. Summer Study Abroad Opportunity in Florence, Italy

Virginia Picchietti, Ph.D., and Marzia Caporale, Ph.D., of the Department of World Languages and Cultures are happy to announce the Summer Study Abroad in Florence, Italy. This academic program will run from May 28 to June 23, 2012. Students will enroll in courses and live in Florence for the duration of the program. The program will also include day trips to other exciting Italian destinations. An informational meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m., in O'Hara Hall, room 306. All students interested in participating are encouraged to attend. Participants must be in good standing at The University of Scranton. January 2012 Travel Course Offered

The Department of Latin American Studies and Women's Studies (LA/W/S) is offering a January 2012 travel course, LAWS 395 Women and Development in Latin America, team-taught by Sharon Meagher, Ph.D., and Linda Ledford-Miller, Ph.D. This course engages students in thinking about the challenges of development in Latin America, with particular focus on the gendered dimensions of both development theory and practice. Students will travel to Puebla, Huehuetla, and Cuetzalan, Mexico, where they will learn from indigenous women who have formed in economic cooperatives. These are very safe locations in Mexico, far removed from the places of violence reported in the news.

We will stay in two eco-tourism centers founded and managed by such indigenous women's co-ops, and we will work side-by-side the women on some projects. The course requires some fall pre-trip class meetings, some online course work, and two weeks of travel to Mexico in January 2012. This course counts as a Latin American Studies and a Women’s Studies elective, and it fulfills cultural diversity (D) credits as well as Social Science (S) credits. The cost will be approximately $1,600 per student, covering airfare, accommodations, workshops and performances plus 1 credit tuition ($846) for the three-credit course (University discounted rate).

The course is open to students in all majors; students must apply by completing an application. Applications can be picked up from Mary Rafter, LA/W/S secretary, in LSC, room 235, or emailing Dr. Meagher, chair of LA/W/S at meaghers1@scranton.edu. Dr. Meagher can also provide additional information and answer any questions that you may have.

NEPA Philharmonic Student Tickets Available for Nov. 4 Concert

Through a University sponsorship of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, a limited number of free student tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The concert is a Masterworks performance, including Adams - the Chairman Dances, Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5. The concert is on Friday, Nov. 4, at the Scranton Cultural Center at 8 p.m. For tickets, contact the Office of Community Relations at ext. 4419 or community@scranton.edu. First Friday Scranton Nov. 4

November’s First Friday art-walk throughout downtown Scranton is this Friday, Nov. 4. The University’s Men & Women for Octaves and Royale Harmony singing groups will be performing at St. Luke’s Church. The Hope Horn Gallery’s “The “Sherwin Series” exhibit is also featured. First Friday is free and runs from 6 – 9 p.m. throughout downtown Scranton. Come out and support your fellow students and enjoy an evening mingling with Scranton area neighbors. Political Engagement Week Set for Nov. 8-15

Political Engagement Week is an opportunity for students to explore public service and engagement at multiple levels, through participation in municipal elections, getting involved with student government, learning about pressing state and national issues and interacting with local elected officials. Events include:

Nov. 8: Election Day! Local Polls, 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Nov. 11: Student Government Meeting, DeNaples Center, room 405, 3:15 p.m.

Nov. 12-13: The Politics of Our Democracy Film Festival Including Gasland, Gerrymandering and Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections, Brennan Hall, room 228 (Nov. 12, 3 p.m., Nov. 13 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.)

Nov. 14: Think Global, Act Local - Panel Discussion with Local Elected Officials & Student Leaders, including Scranton’s Mayor Chris Doherty, New Loyola Science Center, room 133, 7 p.m.
