Film Festival Exposes Rebellion Behind Iron Curtain
An East German Film Festival at The University of Scranton will give local audiences a rare glimpse into life in the German Democratic Republic before the fall of the Berlin Wall. This year’s festival features three films from a series titled “Rebels with a Cause,” which was screened in 2005 at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.
In its fifth year, the festival, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall on Nov. 1, 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. All films will be shown with English subtitles. To view the full release, click here.

Mass of Remembrance Set for Nov. 10
As part of the Nov. 10 Mass, there will be a ritual reading of the names of those who have died since this time last year. If you have lost a loved one during the past year and would like their name included during the Mass, please email Amy Hoegen at hoegena2@scranton.edu and include your name, the name of the deceased and your relationship to them, as well as if you plan on attending the Mass of Remembrance. SIFE Hosts Successful October Events
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) wore pink and rallied on the Dionne Campus Green on Oct. 6 to promote breast cancer awareness. SIFE gave out pink cupcakes and informational material to educate an untapped audience – college students – about the importance of early detection. SIFE also presented a $1,075 check, raised through donations, to the Susan G. Komen-For the Cure Foundation. Dolly Woody, executive director of KOMEN-NEPA, accepted the check on behalf of the organization.
On Oct. 27, SIFE and the Small Business Development Center hosted the Youth Leadership Series. At the workshop, 38 seventh- and eighth-grade students participated in hands-on activities that focused on leadership, team-building and problem solving. SIFE and SBDC will also host the Youth Entrepreneurship Series on Tuesday, Nov. 1. This workshop will teach 9-11th graders from Forest City Regional High School how to start their own businesses. The students will learn how to create mission statements, business plans, marketing campaigns and advertisements.

Adopt an Angel/Giving Tree Programs
Here’s how it works
ADOPT AN ANGEL: Purchase toys and clothing for a child in need from our local community. Names, sizes and wishes are provided. Spend about $100. Gifts are due, unwrapped, to the Community Outreach Office by Wednesday, Dec. 7. Please include a roll of wrapping paper and tape. Be sure to include batteries if your items require them. Put the child’s name and assigned number on each item please.
GIVING TREE: Our tree will be on the second floor of the DeNaples Center by Friday, Nov. 11. Take an ornament for a boy or girl, age 0-teens, and purchase a gift of your choice for a value of about $25. Return, unwrapped, to the Community Outreach Office, by Wednesday, Dec. 7.

This year, most of our children are from area Headstart preschool programs. They must meet federal poverty standards to attend this program. A family of four can make no more than $22,350. Other programs that will benefit from our holiday programs are Friends of the Poor, United Neighborhood Centers and area group foster homes.

League of Women Voters Announces Upcoming Debates
The league is pleased to announce our new Online Voter Guide available at www.lwvlackawanna.org and through VOTE411.org. This new service is provided free of charge to candidates through a collaboration with LWVUS and our local League of Women Voters. Included in the inaugural guide are all candidates for Lackawanna County offices and for Scranton City races where more than one candidate will appear on the ballot.
Launched by the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) in October of 2006, VOTE411.org is a "one-stop-shop" for election related information. It provides nonpartisan information to the public with both general and state-specific information. An important component of VOTE411.org is the polling place locator, which enables users to type in their address and retrieve the poll location for the voting precinct in which that address is located. The League has found that this is among the most sought after information in the immediate days leading up to, and on, Election Day.
Players Present "The Clean House"
The University of Scranton Players will present "The Clean House," by Sarah Ruhl, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. in the McDade Center for the Literary and Performing Arts. The production features Sarah Neitz as Lane; Vanessa Revlas as Matilde; Catherine Fischer as Virginia; Camille Reinecke as Ana; and Joe McGurl as Charles. McGurl, Reinecke, as well as Jim Shygelski (stage manager) and Bernadette Mick (assistant stage manager) are from the greater Scranton area.
Tickets are available by reservation, or may be purchased at the box office located on the first floor of the McDade Center, next to the Royal Theater, at any time on the night of the performance.
