Dominick Farinacci to Perform with Jazz Band

Acclaimed young trumpet sensation Dominick Farinacci will perform a special Halloween weekend concert with The University of Scranton Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the University’s Houlihan-McLean Center. Audience members are encouraged to arrive in costume.

The program will feature a variety of big band selections including W. C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues,” Duke Ellington’s “Portrait of Louis Armstrong” and “Boy Meets Horn,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust,” and many other selections. To read the full release, click here.

Students Commemorate National Food Day

Nine student clubs at The University of Scranton have planned a weeklong series of events Monday, Oct. 24, through Friday, Oct. 28, to recognize National Food Day. To read the full release, click here.

Film Festival Exposes Rebellion Behind Iron Curtain

An East German Film Festival at The University of Scranton will give local audiences a rare glimpse into life in the German Democratic Republic before the fall of the Berlin Wall. This year’s festival features three films from a series titled “Rebels with a Cause,” which was screened in 2005 at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.

In its fifth year, the festival, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall on Nov. 1, 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. All films will be shown with English subtitles. To view the full release, click here.

Jewish POW in Nazi Germany to Lecture Nov. 10

The experiences of a Jewish-American prisoner of war in Nazi Germany during World War II will be the topic of a lecture by Robert R. Max, a slave laborer who escaped from his captors, earned several prestigious medals, and became a community and business leader in northern New Jersey.

The Weinberg Judaic Studies Institute of The University of Scranton will present “From American Soldier to Nazi Slave Laborer” at The University of Scranton on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 509 of Brennan Hall on campus. Woman Entrepreneur Honored

Marie Page was honored as the 16th Award for Woman Entrepreneur (AWE) by The University of Scranton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at a luncheon held in Scranton on Oct. 11. The University has released its Feast of All Saints Liturgy Schedule for Tuesday, Nov. 1. There will be Masses at 12:05 and 4:40 p.m. in the Madonna della Strada Chapel. Mass of Remembrance Set for Nov. 10

On Thursday, Nov. 10, a Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated in the Madonna della Strada Chapel at 4:40 p.m. Please join us as we remember in prayer the deceased family members, friends and loved ones of the students, faculty and staff of The University of Scranton.
 
As part of the Nov. 10 Mass, there will be a ritual reading of the names of those who have died since this time last year. If you have lost a loved one during the past year and would like their name included during the Mass, please email Amy Hoegen at hoegena2@scranton.edu and include your name, the name of the deceased and your relationship to them, as well as if you plan on attending the Mass of Remembrance. Bus Excursion Heads for Newark

The University of Scranton’s Schemel Forum is planning a bus trip to Newark, N.J., on Saturday, Oct. 29, to “Discover Newark: Its Art, Its History, Its Future.” Newark is rich in its industrial, civic and cultural history; fraught with urban problems; and, at the same time, choosing a bright future through its ingenuity, resilience and extraordinary civic leadership. Participants will visit the Newark Art Museum and have lunch at a fine Portuguese restaurant with Clement Price, Distinguished Service Professor at Rutgers University, and Newark’s civic leaders. Participants will also tour the city’s historic sites with Dr. Price.

Philosophy Cafe Scheduled Thursday

The Phi Sigma Tau Philosophy Honor Society will present Dr. Ileana Szymanski's “Philosophy of Food” on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. in the Loyola Science Center, room 133 (ground-floor auditorium). Join us for an evening of lively discussion about philosophy. Snacks included!

Personal Training Certification Offered

On Saturday, Oct. 29, and Sunday, Oct. 30, there will be a Personal Training Certification Workshop in O'Hara Hall, offered through NETA, the National Exercise Trainers Association. The course, open to anyone, consists of a two-day exam preparation workshop which includes 14 hours of lecture, demonstrations and practical hands-on applications. Participants will gain technical knowledge and leadership skills needed to implement effective, motivational, and safe exercise programming for clients. Upon successful completion of the multiple choice exam, participants will receive a two-year certification. The cost is $419. League of Women Voters Announces Debates

The League of Women Voters of Lackawanna County, the Political Science Department, College Democrats and College Republicans will host candidate debates in the Moskovitz Theater of The DeNaples Center.
  • Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.
    Candidates for Scranton City Council, Jack Loscombe (D), Bob McGoff (D) and Lee Morgan (R).
    Voters will vote for two.       
  • Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m.
    Candidates for Lackawanna County Commissioner. Corey O’Brien (D), Jim Wansacz (D), William Jones (R) and Patrick O’Malley (R).
    Voters will vote for two.

Prayer Shawl Ministry to Meet on Campus

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be meeting this semester on:

We invite you to join us again and to bring friends that are interested in knitting or crocheting. New knitters are welcome, we will teach anyone who wants to learn how to knit. We have no experienced crocheters, but welcome experienced crocheters who would like to be part of the ministry.

Players Present "The Clean House"

The University of Scranton Players will be opening their newest production, "The Clean House," by Sarah Ruhl, on Friday, Oct. 28, in the McDade Center for the Literary and Performing Arts. The production will run Oct. 28–29 at 8 p.m., Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. and Nov. 4-5 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.. The production features Sarah Neitz as Lane; Vanessa Revlas as Matilde; Catherine Fischer as Virginia; Camille Reinecke as Ana; and Joe McGurl as Charles. McGurl, Reinecke, as well as Jim Shygelski (stage manager) and Bernadette Mick (assistant stage manager) are from the greater Scranton area.

Tickets are available by reservation, or may be purchased at the box office located on the first floor of the McDade Center, next to the Royal Theater, at any time on the night of the performance.
