Scranton Recognizes Careers in Student Affairs Month

October is nationally recognized as Careers in Student Affairs Month and the Division of Student Affairs at The University of Scranton is coordinating some great events throughout the month. These events are meant to allow student leaders who are interested in a future career in student affairs to explore their possibilities. Events throughout the month include attendance at a conference, webinars, a panel reception, and shadowing Student Affairs staff members. For more event details and resources, click here.

These webinars, panel reception and conference will allow the undergraduate students to learn more about a career in student affairs. Topics discussed during the month will include opportunity to network with staff on campus, as well as regional student affairs professionals through webinars and the conference. It will also the students to understand the history and value of student affairs, hear stories about the rewards that come from the field, explore graduate schools and programs, gain practical knowledge on job searching, placement exchanges and resume development, and network with professional members from other institutions. 

The students from the University who attend these events throughout the month are able to realize the personal and professional growth opportunities available with a career in student affairs. It is a rewarding career path that is able to have a direct interaction with students attending a higher education institution. Many Scranton students are currently involved in many functional areas of student affairs and are preparing themselves for a rewarding and progressive career in student affairs.

Careers in Student Affairs Webinar
"Success From The Start: Graduate Students & New Professionals"
Thursday, Oct. 13, from 3-4 p.m.
DeNaples Center, room 213

Careers in Student Affairs Webinar presented by the National Association for Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 3-4 p.m. The event will be held in the DeNaples Center, room 213. Light refreshments will be served.

In this webinar, the presenters will focus on what a successful transition from graduate school to a professional position looks like, as well as core competencies that all new professionals need and how to build them while they're working. Participants will then be invited to think about various topics related to transitions, as well as looking into professional development opportunities that meet individual needs.

Careers in Student Affairs Panel and Reception
Monday, Oct. 24, from 5-6:30 p.m.
DeNaples Center, room 405

Help us celebrate the National Careers in Student Affairs Month as our student affairs leaders engage in an interactive panel with eager student leaders who want our student affairs jobs! This program is open and encouraged for any undergraduates who would like to explore the student affairs profession. Hors d'œuvre and beverages will be served. This event will allow students to both formally and informally interact with student affairs staff members and have ask questions about our positions, education, background, etc.  This is an event that you do not want to miss!

"Graduate School 101: From Application to Acceptance"
Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 1-2:30 p.m.
DeNaples Center, room 213

Careers in Student Affairs Webinar presented by the ACPA - College Student Educators International on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 1-2:30 p.m. The event will be held in the DeNaples Center, room 213. Light refreshments will be served.

Are you an undergraduate student interested in pursuing a graduate degree in student affairs? Are you a faculty or staff member who has students interested in the field of college student development? This Webcast is designed to provide an overview of navigating the graduate admissions process in student affairs. From deciding between a part-time versus full-time program to having a successful campus interview, a panel of faculty, staff, and current graduate students will share their expertise on graduate programs in student affairs.

Careers in Student Affairs Mini Conference
Friday, October 28

The Careers in Student Affairs Mini-Conference is at Rutgers University on Friday, Oct. 28. The Division of Student Affairs is fully funding a group of students to attend the conference and learn more about student affairs. Registration, transportation and meals will all be provided. Please let Michael Baumhardt, assistant director of the Center for Student Engagement, know if you are interested at baumhardtm2@scranton.edu or ext.6233.
