Fall Break Closing Announcement for On-Campus Housing

On-campus houses, apartments and residence halls will close for fall break on Saturday, Oct. 15, at noon. On-campus housing re-opens on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at noon.

Dining Information
The Fresh Food Company (third floor of the DeNaples Center) closes on Friday, Oct. 14, at 2:30 p.m. and re-opens on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 4:45 p.m.
The first-floor Food Court is open on Friday, Oct. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Regular hours for dining on the first-floor Food Court resume on Tuesday, Oct., 18 at 8:30 a.m.
Meal plan schedule resumes on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at dinner. Students may use Royal or Flex earlier that day if needed.

All residents are required to complete the following closing procedures:
*Clean your room (i.e. remove trash/clean out personal refrigerators).
*Remove any items that may spoil over break (i.e. milk, bread, etc.).
*Close and lock all windows.
*Pull down and close blinds.
*Turn off all lights.
*Close and lock room door.
*Last person to leave, sign the "We're Outta Here" form and place on the outside of the door.

Individual residents who would like to make a request to stay on campus during the break must submit an online form through UIS by Friday, Oct. 7. This form can be accessed through My.scranton.edu (UIS, Student Tab, Student Services/Financial Aid, Residence Life, Break Request). Residents will only be granted permission to stay on campus with legitimate reasons (distance, employment, etc.). Break housing for groups of students (athletes, service trip participants, etc.) has been previously arranged through Athletics or Faculty/Staff members and those students do not need to submit an individual request on UIS. Please note that graduate students living in Herold House and Dorothy Day Apts. are not required to leave campus housing during holiday breaks.

College Night First Friday Scranton Oct. 7

October’s First Friday art-walk throughout downtown Scranton is going to have “College Night” as its theme. Student groups will be performing and exhibiting art, including the University’s Men and Women for Octaves at St. Luke’s Church. The Hope Horn Gallery’s “Taiwan Sublime” exhibit is also featured. First Friday is free and runs from 6 – 9 p.m. throughout downtown Scranton. Come out and support your fellow students and enjoy an evening mingling with Scranton area neighbors. January 2012 Guadalajara Trip Planned

Applications are being accepted for the 14th Guadalajara, Mexico Study/Travel Tour, to take place from Jan. 6 through Jan. 26, 2012. The trip is co-sponsored by the Departments of World Languages and Cultures, and Political Science. University of Scranton faculty group leaders are Robert Parsons, Ph.D., and Yamile Silva, Ph.D.

The cost of the trip is $2,350 plus one-credit Intersession tuition of $919 for the three-credit Spanish course (University discount rate for Intersession travel courses). The Political Science course is completed in Scranton in the spring semester and is part of the flat tuition for the spring. The cost includes all transportation, room and board with a Mexican family, instruction in both the Spanish language and contemporary Mexican culture and politics at UNIVA University, and several excursions to places of interest in the Guadalajara region. A weekend trip to Mexico City is also likely, but will depend upon the number of students who have signed up and other financial considerations.

Students earn six credits, three in Spanish (for Intersession) and three in Political Science (for the Spring semester). Both courses are taught in Spanish. Current enrollment in or the completion of Intermediate Spanish is the minimal prerequisite for this course; however, only very strong current intermediate students, with the recommendation of their Spanish professor, are accepted into the program. Current enrollment in or the completion of Spanish Conversation (SPAN 311) or a higher level Spanish course is strongly recommended.

The deadline for the deposit of $400 is Friday, Oct. 28.Full payment of the balance of $1950 is due Monday, Nov. 21. The tuition payment will be billed separately by the Bursar's Office.

Fall Break Service Trip for Local Flood Relief

The Community Outreach Office is organizing students who are interested in volunteering with local flood relief during fall break. The cost is $40 per person. Meals and accommodations will be provided at the Retreat Center at Chapman Lake from Friday evening, Oct. 13, through Tuesday, Oct. 18. Students will participate in service from Saturday-Tuesday. Resume Writing Workshop Set for Thursday

The Office of Career Services will be hosting a Resume Writing Workshop on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 11:30 a.m. It will be held in the Career Services office in Ciszek Hall. (Mulberry Street). Registratrion is required and students can sign up though their College Central account or by calling 941-7640.

Doyle Stock Trading Competition

The University of Scranton will host a student stock trading competition utilizing a real-world stock trading platform and simulated brokerage accounts. This competition honors the memory of James C. Doyle '66, loyal alumnus of the University and respected financial advisor.

Competition is open to all KSOM undergraduate and graduate students. Competition will last from Oct. 15, 2011, to April 15, 2012. The student with the highest portfolio value at 4 p.m. on April 15, 2012, will receive a $500 cash award.

Spring Break Service Trip Information Sessions

Diversity Art Contest/Show

The Office of Equity and Diversity is holding an art contest for University students as a part of its annual Diversity Fair on Thursday, Nov. 3.

Subject: Human Diversity/Human Creativity
Medium: paint, ink, chalk on canvas or art paper, paper, cloth etc.  (No sculptures accepted).
Specs: The submissions must be designed for wall-hanging, with dimensions between 20 in. x 16 in. and 25 in. x 33 in

The submission date is Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. at the Office of Equity & Diversity, IMBM 100.

Prizes (in gift certificates) are: first place, $150; second place, $75; third place, $50. First place will be hung in the Office of Equity and Diversity.

Biology Travel Course to Costa Rica & Panama

Tropical Biology (Biology 195) (3 credits)

This course involves on-campus classes during the January 2012 intersession and a 16-day trip to Costa Rica and Panama (Jan 13-28). It can be taken by any student to meet the general education requirement and by biology majors as an elective or to meet population and organismal requirements. The only prerequisites are an ability to swim and a sense of adventure.

The trip involves extensive traveling (by bus or van, boats, and one internal flight) and is designed to acquaint students with the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest and the coral reef-the two most diverse ecosystems on Earth. We will visit national parks and hike rainforests and snorkel reefs on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Costa Rica and Panama. Other activities include whitewater rafting and zip-line through the canopy. We stay in hotels and lodges and are accompanied by bilingual naturalist guides and certified PADI divers.

Students will be tested over assigned readings and are required to keep an extensive field notebook and personal daily journal.

The total trip cost (round trip airfare from the United States to Costa Rica, all land and boat transport, one internal flight, hotels, meals, guides, etc.) is $3,150. In addition, students have to pay tuition for 1 credit ($919). Other expenses not included are van transport from the University to and from a NewYork airport, personal expenses (laundry), departure tax, gratuities for guides, etc.

If interested, email John Conway, Ph.D., (conwayj1@scranton.edu) as soon as possible. A deposit of $500 is required as soon as possible to reserve air and hotel space. The second payment of $1,650 is due Oct 20 and the final payment is due Nov 21.

Summer Study in Florence, Italy

Virginia Picchietti, Ph.D., and Marzia Caporale, Ph.D., of the Department of World Languages and Cultures are happy to announce the Summer Study Abroad in Florence, Italy. This academic program will run from May 28 to June 23, 2012. Students will enroll in courses and live in Florence for the duration of the program. The program will also include day trips to other exciting Italian destinations. An informational meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m., in O'Hara Hall, room 306. All students interested in participating are encouraged to attend. Participants must be in good standing at The University of Scranton. January 2012 Travel Course Offered

The Department of Latin American Studies and Women's Studies (LA/W/S) is offering a January 2012 travel course, LAWS 395 Women and Development in Latin America, team-taught by Sharon Meagher, Ph.D., and Linda Ledford-Miller, Ph.D. This course engages students in thinking about the challenges of development in Latin America, with particular focus on the gendered dimensions of both development theory and practice. Students will travel to Puebla, Huehuetla, and Cuetzalan, Mexico, where they will learn from indigenous women who have formed in economic cooperatives. These are very safe locations in Mexico, far removed from the places of violence reported in the news.

We will stay in two eco-tourism centers founded and managed by such indigenous women's co-ops, and we will work side-by-side the women on some projects. The course requires some fall pre-trip class meetings, some online course work, and two weeks of travel to Mexico in January 2012. This course counts as a Latin American Studies and a Women’s Studies elective, and it fulfills cultural diversity (D) credits as well as Social Science (S) credits. The cost will be approximately $1,600 per student, covering airfare, accommodations, workshops and performances plus 1 credit tuition ($846) for the three-credit course (University discounted rate).

The course is open to students in all majors; students must apply by completing an application. Applications can be picked up from Mary Rafter, LA/W/S secretary, in LSC, room 235, or emailing Dr. Meagher, chair of LA/W/S at meaghers1@scranton.edu. Dr. Meagher can also provide additional information and answer any questions that you may have.
