Daron Acemoglu, Ph.D., Announced as Henry George Lecture Speaker

The Department of Economics and Finance is proud to announce that this year's Henry George speaker, Daron Acemoglu, Ph.D., Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics at MIT, will deliver our 26th Annual Henry George Lecture titled “Why Nations Fail?” on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in DeNaples Center ballroom, room 407. The University would like to acknowledge the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation for its continued generous financial support, without which, this event would not be possible. All University faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend and actively participate in this valuable lecture. More details about this year’s program will follow. 

Asian Studies Concentration Receives K-16 Collaboration Award

The University of Scranton’s Asian Studies concentration, along with the Abington Heights School District, were selected to receive the Commonwealth’s 2011 “Bringing the World to Pennsylvania: K-16 Collaboration Award” for their innovative cooperation on Chinese language and cultural instruction. SBDC Celebrates Entrepreneurship at AWE Luncheon

Cadets Selected As Distinguished Military Graduates

On Monday, Oct. 26, U.S. Army Cadet Command announced that three students from The University of Scranton had been selected as Distinguished Military Graduates for the 2011-2012 School Year. Seniors Emily Rainey, Evan Dimakas and Sidney Jaques were all recognized, as well as two other seniors from the Royal Warrior Battalion. To view the full release, click here.

Student Leaders Discover Their Roles, Themselves at Royal Summit

The University of Scranton’s Center for Student Engagement hosted its inaugural Royal Summit recently at the Bryn Mawr Mountain Retreat and Convention Center. Twenty-nine student leaders along with three staff members took part in the event intended to hone individual leadership skills as participants networked with other student leaders and engaged in team-building exercises. Grigorescu Named CTLE Director

Eugeniu Grigorescu has been named director of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) at The University of Scranton. The center encourages and supports student learning, faculty enrichment, instructional design and the pedagogical application of technology at The University of Scranton. Lee National Denim Day Set for Friday

Lee National Denim Day/Fight Against Breast Cancer is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 7. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Please help change that number and participate in Lee National Denim Day. Started by Lee Jeans in 1996, Denim Day is a day where people come together for an awesome cause and wear their jeans to work. This year's Lee National Denim Day ambassador is Mike Rowe and his mom, Peggy, a breast cancer survivor. Please make you donation of $5 and receive your pink ribbon pin at the Accounts Payable Office, St. Thomas Hall, room 111.

Vote for The University of Scranton to win the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce's People's Choice Award! The University is a finalist for the Chamber's Sage Awards in the Pride and Progress category for the Mulberry Street Improvement Project (Phase One), the Commons Extension Landscaping Project and the Upper Class Residence Halls.

Just like American Idol and Dancing with the Stars, the Chamber turns to the community to decide the outcome of the People’s Choice Award! The nominees include finalists from the current year’s SAGE Award finalists. And, like the other SAGE Award categories, the winner is announced at the Chamber Gala on Nov. 11. Pet Therapy Rescheduled for Wednesday

Due to last week's poor weather, the Community Outreach Office rescheduled this semester's Pet Therapy: Canines on Campus for Wednesday, Oct. 5, on the DeNaples Center patio and Dionne Campus Green. Intersession/Spring 2012 Registration Information

Intersession/Spring 2012 Registration Information for Undergraduate Students and Advisors 
Registration for Intersession and Spring 2012 courses will begin for undergraduate students on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Specific dates, as well as what students need to do in preparation for registration advising and to register by web, can be found in the e-mail sent to students on Sept. 29, and also on the Registrar’s web page at www.scranton.edu/registrar.

What do undergraduate students need to do now?
First, pick up your registration materials at the following locations:
  • KSOM students at the KSOM Advising Center (Brennan Hall 206); 
  • PCPS students at the PCPS Advising Center (McGurrin Hall 101); 
  • CGCE students at the CGCE Office (O'Hara Hall 201); 
  • CAS sophomores, juniors and seniors at the Registrar's Office (St. Thomas Hall 301). 
  • CAS freshmen: The CAS Advising Center has set up an advising appointment for you. Pick up your appointment letter, along with your CAPP and registration forms, in theCAS Advising Center (St. Thomas 309).
Second, make and keep an advising appointment at your advising center or with your faculty advisor.  [Special note to CAS freshmen: Since an advising appointment has already been made for you, you just need to pick up your appointment letter in the CAS Advising Center.]

Third, complete your registration worksheets and forms and then meet with your advisor to review your course selections. Your advisor will then provide you with your registration start date and term PIN needed to access web registration. [Note: You will also need your correctUIS PIN. If you do not know your UIS PIN, you may access the online self-service PIN reset program, or contact the Technology Support Center at 941-4357 prior to your initial date of registration.] 

Fourth, be sure to clear any holds you may have on your account from the Bursar, Student Affairs, Library, Network Resources or Public Safety before your registration start date so that you can access the web registration system. Students who have holds on their account will not be able to register until they satisfy their obligations. 

Web registration instructions, dates, and course listings, as well as the dynamic Course Schedule Search, are available through the Registrar’s web page at www.scranton.edu/registrar.

IEEE Club Hosts Weekly Meeting Thursday

On Thursday, Oct. 6, the IEEE Club will host its weekly meeting in room 334 of the Loyola Science Center. This week's topic will be "Disulfide Bonds, reading between the lines of Genetic Code." The presentation will be given by Tim Foley, Ph.D., of the Chemistry Department from noon to 12:50 p.m.

The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a program that provides students with the opportunity not only to participate in a campus wide event in the form of an IEEE seminar series (presentations by distinguished scientists, community business leaders, as well as our alumni and various employers/prospective job companies), but also as a time and place to pursue the club agenda, professional development and networking.

Law, Medical and Graduate School Fair Oct. 12

The annual Law/Medical/Graduate School Fair, hosted by the Office of Career Services, will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the DeNaples Center ballroom from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Currently, there are more than 30 law, graduate and medical schools attending, including The Commonwealth Medical College, Fordam University and Villanova University. Bookstore Celebrates National Student Day

To celebrate National Student Day on Thursday, Oct. 6, all students will receive 20 percent off a single apparel or gift item in the bookstore located in the DeNaples Center. Real Talk Session Set for Oct. 4

Please join the Office of Multicultural Affairs for the semester's first session of "Real Talk" on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 11:30 a.m. in the DeNaples Center, room 405. The session will discuss Latin Heritage Month with guest speaker Joyce Avila, who will lead a conversation titled "Can you Tell if I'm Illegal?" Light refreshments will be served.

Attention students, staff and faculty: Register now for the 10 in 10 nutrition challenge sponsored by the Center for Health Education and Wellness and Employee Wellness. Participate in Diversity Fair 4

The Office of Equity and Diversity invites you to participate in and submit proposals for the upcoming fourth annual Diversity Fair. The fair will take place Thursday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the DeNaples Center ballroom. The theme for this year's fair is "Move It! The Exploration of Human Rights Movements." We seek faculty, staff and students to use their scholarly knowledge to provide information tables to educate the community on various human rights movements.  Please click here to see the guidelines for proposals and participation.

College Night First Friday Oct. 7
October’s First Friday art-walk throughout downtown Scranton is going to have “College Night” as its theme. Student groups will be performing and exhibiting art, including the University’s Men and Women for Octaves at St. Luke’s Church. The Hope Horn Gallery’s “Taiwan Sublime” exhibit is also featured.  First Friday is free and runs from 6 – 9 p.m. throughout downtown Scranton. Brunch in the City with the Lackawanna Historical Society, Oct. 9
On Sunday, Oct. 9, the second in a new series of downtown walking tours will be offered by the Lackawanna Historical Society starting at Courthouse Square, corner of Spruce and Adams, at 10 a.m. and ending with a brunch at the Society's Catlin House at 11:30 a.m. Visit the Lackawanna Historical Society’s website for more information.
