Friends, Families Visit Campus this Weekend

More than 2,000 friends and family members of University of Scranton students have registered to attend Family Weekend, which will take place Friday, Sept. 30, to Sunday, Oct. 2. The weekend is designed to allow students to reconnect with family while introducing them to the Scranton community. To view the full release, click here

Royal Warrior Battalion Hosts Commander

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, Colonel Twala Mathis, commander of the 2nd ROTC Brigade, along with her senior non-commissioned officer, Sergeant Major Kevin Goetz, visited the Royal Warrior Battalion and The University of Scranton. Colonel Mathis assumed command of the 2nd ROTC Brigade headquartered at Fort Dix, New Jersey, in mid-July this year. This was her first visit to the University, one of 41 host institutions to Army ROTC she commands across Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and throughout New England. To view the full release, click here.

Pet Therapy Set for Wednesday

The Community Outreach Office will host this semester's Pet Therapy: Canines on Campus on Wednesday, Sept. 28 on the DeNaples Center patio and Dionne Campus Green. Business Club's Recruiting Expo on Thursday

The Business Club’s Annual Fall Recruiting Expo is slated for Thursday, Sept. 29, on the fourth floor of the DeNaples Center, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Expo Dinner and Reception will be held at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Bookstore Celebrates National Student Day

To celebrate National Student Day on Thursday, Oct. 6, all students will receive 20 percent off a single apparel or gift item in the bookstore located in the DeNaples Center. Real Talk Session Set for Oct. 4

Please join the Office of Multicultural Affairs for the semester's first session of "Real Talk" on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 11:30 a.m. in the DeNaples Center, room 405. The session will discuss Latin Heritage Month with guest speaker Joyce Avila, who will lead a conversation titled "Can you Tell if I'm Illegal?" Light refreshments will be served.

Capture the Clouds

The mobile device market is being flooded by new computer, smartphone and tablet devices intended to keep you connected to your friends, family and files through various web apps and content clouds. Selecting the web apps and cloud services that best meet your needs for managing content across all of your devices can often be a daunting and frustrating task.

IT Services hopes to remove some of the confusion from the web app and cloud service selection process by introducing attendees of the Thursday, Sept. 29, IT Forum to various web apps and cloud services that can be accessed from PC and Macintosh computers as well as most iOS and Android devices.

Register Now for Nutrition Challenge

Attention students, staff and faculty: Register now for the 10 in 10 nutrition challenge sponsored by the Center for Health Education and Wellness and Employee Wellness. IEEE Club Hosts Meeting Thursday

The IEEE club is hosting Terry Sweeney, Ph.D., of the University's Biology Department, on Thursday, Sept. 29, from noon to 12:50 p.m. in room 334 of the Loyola Science Center. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a program that provides students with the opportunity not only to participate in a campus wide event in the form of an IEEE seminar series (presentations by distinguished scientists, community business leaders, as well as our alumni and various employers/prospective job companies), but also as a time and place to pursue the club agenda, professional development and networking.

Participate in Diversity Fair 4

The Office of Equity and Diversity invites you to participate in and submit proposals for the upcoming fourth annual Diversity Fair. The fair will take place Thursday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the DeNaples Center ballroom. The theme for this year's fair is "Move It! The Exploration of Human Rights Movements." We seek faculty, staff and students to use their scholarly knowledge to provide information tables to educate the community on various human rights movements.  Please click here to see the guidelines for proposals and participation.

Players Present "Wait Until Dark"

An unwitting accomplice to a drug smuggling operation, Suzy Hendrix must use all her cunning to stay alive. Blinded by a recent accident and sequestered in her basement apartment, alone and vulnerable, she is forced to rely on the element of darkness and her four remaining senses to outwit the conmen who have come to retrieve their illicit goods 

The University Players present the suspenseful 1966 thriller "Wait Until Dark," directed by Michael O'Steen and written by Frederick Knott, on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 2, in the Royal Theatre in the McDade Center for the Literary and Performing Arts. (Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.; Sunday performances are at 2 p.m.)

This thriller, by the playwright who brought you "Dial M for Murder," was recently produced at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe and will have you on the edge of your seat. (Suitable for all ages except the very young) This performance will have audience members sitting at the edge of their seats to see if this blind woman can successfully outwit, outsmart, and outsurvive her assailants!

General admission is $8, and students, faculty, staff and seniors pay $5.

Grant Deadline Extended

The deadline to apply for Diversity Initiative Funding has been extended to Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, for fall programs. The spring program deadline remains Feb. 28, 2012. The University of Scranton values diversity as a critical part of its mission. It is the intention of the University administration and Board of Trustees to promote initiatives that energize the commitment to diversity, provide opportunity for international and inter-cultural engagement as well as expand opportunities for multicultural experiences for our community. This is embedded within the 2010-2015 Strategic Plan for The University of Scranton and captured in Magis (the pursuit of excellence), Cura Personalis (care for the whole person) and Rei Solicitudo (stewardship).

The Diversity Initiatives Fund is available to any campus group, department or individual that seeks to promote a greater understanding of diversity through inclusive pedagogies, educational opportunities, multicultural activities and community outreach programs. Students are encouraged to apply, however, they are required to have an employee sponsor (staff or faculty). All Diversity Initiatives Fund applicants are strongly encouraged to target one or more of the goals outlined in the guidelines provided with the application. Click here for application. PINK Rugby Game Set for Saturday

Come one, come all to the annual PINK Rugby Game hosted by Colleges Against Cancer! Please help us support Breast Cancer Awareness on Saturday, Oct. 1, at South Side Complex, 3rd Avenue and Broadway Street in Scranton, starting at 11 a.m. There will be great food and prizes that everyone will enjoy! Also, at the game there will be an auction of The University of Scranton’s rugby team jerseys! Your attendance at the game is greatly appreciated!

40 Days for Life Starts Wednesday

Students for Life (SFL) Club will be hosting "40 Days for Life" from Sept. 28 through Nov. 6. "40 Days for Life" is a community-based campaign that focuses on prayer and fasting, vigil and community awareness to end abortion in the United States.

Flu Shots Available Thursday

Flu Shots are available to students, staff and faculty on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Student Health Services. No appointment needed, though your Royal Card ID required. The cost is $20 (check, cash or Royal Card).

Downtown Familiarization Tour with Scranton Tomorrow, Oct. 1
Scranton Tomorrow hosts a monthly “FAM” – familiarization – downtown tour on the first Saturday of the month. The tour is open to anyone interested in exploring downtown Scranton. This week’s tour departs from the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel at noon.  Email leslie@scrantontomorrow.org for more information or to RSVP.  The Office of Community Relations is also partnering with Scranton Tomorrow to host a special tour for Faculty and Staff on Thursday, Sept. 29.  Email community@scranton.edu or call ext. 4419 for details.

October’s First Friday art-walk throughout downtown Scranton is going to have “College Night” as its theme. Student groups from The University of Scranton will be performing and exhibiting art along with other area colleges. The event is free and runs from 6 – 9 p.m. throughout downtown Scranton. Pages & Places Book Festival Tickets Available
The Office of Community Relations and the Office of the Associate Provost for Civic Engagement & Academic Mission are sponsoring the Pages & Places Book Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1, which takes place throughout downtown Scranton. 150 free student tickets are available for faculty to distribute or for students to obtain directly.
