Resume Writing Workshop Set for Thursday

The Office of Career Services will be conducting a resume writing workshop on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 11:30 am in its computer lab in Ciszek Hall. You can register online by logging into your College Central account and select the workshop listed or by calling the office at 941-7640. The workshop will approximately last an hour. Get that resume started!

Spring Break Service Trip Information Sessions

If you are interested in completing service over spring break, please attend one of two informations sessions on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 13, at noon in the Moskovitz Theater on the fourth floor of DeNaples Center. Psi Chi Accepting Applications

Applications are now being accepted for Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology. Eligibility requirements are: junior or senior status; top 35% of class in terms of GPA (3.40 or higher); completion of at least 15 credits in psychology (including statistics and research methods); an average of 3.0 or better in psychology courses; and a major or minor in psychology. Applications may be obtained from the lobby in the Psychology Department or from John Norcross, Ph.D., at Alumni Memorial Hall, room 224. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 30. 

Kaplan Offers Free Practice Tests

Kaplan is offering free practice tests for GRE, LSAT, MCAT, GMAT and DAT. To register, call 1-800-KAP-TEST, visit kaptest.com/practice or 
text "PRACTICE" to 30364. The practice tests will be offered on
Saturday, Oct. 1, in Brennan Hall. GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT tests are at 10 a.m., GMAT tests are at 11 a.m. For more information, a representative from Kaplan will be at a table in the DeNaples Center on Thursday, Sept. 22. For more information, contact Cheryl

Sand Volleyball Tournament Slated for Friday

The Recreational Sports Department, in conjunction with Late Night at Scranton is hosting a four-on-four sand volleyball tournament on Friday, Sept. 23. The tournament will commence at 6 p.m. and continue into the morning hours, until a winning team is declared (cash prize!). Sign-up in the Rec. Office before Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. Come out for some late summer volleyball, Kan Jam, bean bag toss, free food and music!

Summer Study in Florence, Italy

Virginia Picchietti, Ph.D., and Marzia Caporale, Ph.D., of the Department of World Languages and Cultures are happy to announce the Summer Study Abroad in Florence, Italy. This academic program will run from May 28 to June 23, 2012. Students will enroll in courses and live in Florence for the duration of the program. The program will also include day trips to other exciting Italian destinations. An informational meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m., in O'Hara Hall, room 306. All students interested in participating are encouraged to attend. Participants must be in good standing at The University of Scranton. January 2012 Travel Course Offered

The Department of Latin American Studies and Women's Studies (LA/W/S) is offering a January 2012 travel course, LAWS 395 Women and Development in Latin America, team-taught by Sharon Meagher, Ph.D., and Linda Ledford-Miller, Ph.D. This course engages students in thinking about the challenges of development in Latin America, with particular focus on the gendered dimensions of both development theory and practice. Students will travel to Puebla, Huehuetla, and Cuetzalan, Mexico, where they will learn from indigenous women who have formed in economic cooperatives. These are very safe locations in Mexico, far removed from the places of violence reported in the news.

We will stay in two eco-tourism centers founded and managed by such indigenous women's co-ops, and we will work side-by-side the women on some projects. The course requires some fall pre-trip class meetings, some online course work, and two weeks of travel to Mexico in January 2012. This course counts as a Latin American Studies and a Women’s Studies elective, and it fulfills cultural diversity (D) credits as well as Social Science (S) credits. The cost will be approximately $1,600 per student, covering airfare, accommodations, workshops and performances plus 1 credit tuition ($846) for the three-credit course (University discounted rate).

The course is open to students in all majors; students must apply by completing an application. Applications can be picked up from Mary Rafter, LA/W/S secretary, in LSC, room 235, or emailing Dr. Meagher, chair of LA/W/S at meaghers1@scranton.edu. Dr. Meagher can also provide additional information and answer any questions that you may have.

  • Friday: 8:30 - 11 a.m. and 1 - 4:30 p.m.
  • Select Saturdays: 9:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Interested applicants must also be able to work some breaks, intercession and possible summers.
