Employee Wellness Announces Fall Events

As the new semester begins, now is a good time to fit some activity into your day. Try volleyball, lunchtime hoops, pilates or yoga. Staff Senate 2011-12 Election Edition Newsletter

New Staff Resources Document Available

The Staff Development Committee of the Staff Senate recently created a Staff Resources Document to help new (and seasoned) employees find the resources (contacts, forms and procedure instructions) they need to complete assigned tasks. Staff can find the Staff Resources Document, which contains active links, on the Staff Senate webpage, www.scranton.edu/staffsenate. The committee will continue to update the document as needed.

The Staff Development Committee includes chair Cathy Mascelli and members Lisa Bealla, Melissa Bevacqua, Janine Freeman, Diane Jachimowicz, Cathy Murphy, Glen Pace, Pauline Palko (non-senator), Jennifer Pennington (non-senator), Pete Sakowski, Anne Marie Stamford, Monica Thomas and Mary Rafter.

On behalf of the Staff Senate, the Staff Development Committee invites you to explore the Staff Senate webpages, attend a Staff Senate meeting, participate in events, and contact your senators with any relevant questions or concerns.

Essential Training for New Staff

The Office of Equity and Diversity invites all staff hired within the last two years to attend essential Sexual Harassment Prevention Training. Training sessions have been scheduled for the following dates:
  • Thursday, Oct. 13
  • Tuesday, Oct. 18
  • Tuesday, Nov. 15
  • Thursday, Nov. 17
  • Thursday, Dec. 1
  • Thursday, Dec. 8
All sessions are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. in Brennan Hall, room 500. A light lunch will be served. Managers are urged to remind their staff to schedule to attend. Separate sessions will be held for managers and supervisors. To schedule your session, email diversity@scranton.edu.

Downtown Tour & Reception Set Sept. 29

The Office of Community Relations in cooperation with the Office of the Provost, the Office of Human Resources and community partner Scranton Tomorrow will convene a Faculty and Staff Downtown Tour on Thursday, Sept. 29. The tour will begin at 4:45 p.m. at Brennan Hall, room 228, proceed throughout the downtown and end at 6:15 p.m. with a reception at 400 Spruce St – a combination of three regional merchants: Nimble Hill Winery, Cangiano’s Italian Specialties and Chocolate Creations.

This event will provide faculty and staff, particularly new members of the campus community, an opportunity to experience and explore Scranton in a unique way. This event is part of on ongoing initiative to familiarize students, faculty and staff with downtown venues and increase University-downtown collaboration.  To RSVP for the tour, email community@scranton.edu or call ext. 4419 by Sunday, Sept. 25 (spouses are welcome). Preference will be given to new faculty and staff; spots for current employees will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Pages & Places Book Festival Tickets Available

The Office of Community Relations and the Office of the Associate Provost for Civic Engagement & Academic Mission are sponsoring the Pages & Places Book Festival on Sat., Oct. 1, which takes place throughout downtown Scranton. 150 free student tickets are available for faculty to give out on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information and tickets, contact community@scranton.edu or call ext. 4419. Panel discussions explore the theme of “Milestones” and include:

•    Coal Region Writers, 9 a.m.
•    The Civil War, Slavery and Justice with Pulitzer Prize-winner Eric Foner, 11 a.m.
•    Free as in Freedom exploring Corporate Culture & the Internet, 2 p.m.
•    Jane Jacobs & the Death and Life of American Rust Belt Cities with Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty and Braddok, PA Mayor John Fetterman, 4 p.m.
•    The City as Literary Influence with National Book-Award-nominee Aleksander Hemon, 6:30 p.m.

An iPad a Week From the CTLE

Do you want to become familiar with the latest tablet technology and its use in pedagogical settings? The CTLE has an iPad that faculty can borrow for up to one week to explore and experiment with. With an iPad you can surf the web, check email, watch movies, read books, take and save class notes. You can download the latest apps and connect the iPad to the video projector in a mediated classroom. For more information or to borrow an iPad, contact the CTLE at x4038.

Pet Therapy in Need of Dogs

This semester's Pet Therapy session is schedule for Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Dionne Campus Green.

We are in desperate need of dogs! If you can bring your well-behaved, social and vaccinated dog to campus to share some fun with students, let us know! If you are interested, email Ellen Judge at judgee2@scranton.edu.
