Employee Wellness Announces Fall Events

As the new semester begins, now is a good time to fit some activity into your day. Try volleyball, lunchtime hoops, pilates or yoga. An iPad a Week From the CTLE

Do you want to become familiar with the latest tablet technology and its use in pedagogical settings? The CTLE has an iPad that faculty can borrow for up to one week to explore and experiment with. With an iPad you can surf the web, check email, watch movies, read books, take and save class notes. You can download the latest apps and connect the iPad to the video projector in a mediated classroom. For more information or to borrow an iPad, contact the CTLE at x4038.

IT Services to Host Symposium on Health Services

IT Services is pleased to announce an Internet 2 Virtual Symposium on Health Services. Working with MAGPI (the Mid-Atlantic Gigapop in Philadelphia for Internet2), The University of Scranton will act as a host site for this exciting opportunity.

MAGPI is pleased to bring you this exciting virtual Advanced Networks and the Health Sciences Symposium event. The Symposium builds upon the success of the national Teaching and Learning with Internet2 Symposium which was held on April 1st. The Health Sciences Symposium aims to reach medical and healthcare practitioners around the pedagogy and technology of delivering advanced healthcare. 

Advanced research and education networks, such as Internet2, offer healthcare and medical practitioners and faculty opportunities to connect to a diverse array of resources and to collaborate with partners around the world toward the delivery of advanced healthcare. Through a series of keynote and breakout sessions, this half-day symposium is designed to give faculty and practitioners a taste of the range of projects and resources that exist and how they can be applied in their own teaching and healthcare practice.

Pet Therapy in Need of Dogs

This semester's Pet Therapy session is schedule for Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Dionne Campus Green.

We are in desperate need of dogs! If you can bring your well-behaved, social and vaccinated dog to campus to share some fun with students, let us know! If you are interested, email Ellen Judge at judgee2@scranton.edu.

In Apri, we had more than 500 people come to visit our pets!

Faculty, Staff Invited to University Family Picnic

The University Family Picnic, an inauguration event, is being held this year on Sunday, Sept. 11. The day will begin with a Mass at 11 a.m. in remembrance of the 10th anniversary of this tragic day. The picnic will follow from noon until 4 p.m., allowing plenty of time for faculty and staff to meet Rev. Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., our 25th president.

A sumptuous menu has been planned which will include bourbon marinated steak, BBQ split chicken breasts, grilled tofu, hamburgers, hot dogs, vegan chili, baked potato bar, summer vegetables, baked beans, pasta salad, potato salad, relish tray, s'mores, key lime bars, ice cream novelties and fresh fruit.

There will be many activities for both the young and old to enjoy:
  • boat rides
  • moonbounce
  • face painting
  • organized games
  • magician
  • horse shoes
A few changes for this year are D.J. Mike Walton will play music and assist with announcements so you won’t miss out on any of the fun. And the Magic of Brent Kessler will be held outside at 2 p.m. in a tent to provide more seating, but you may also bring a blanket and sit on the lawn.

Please return your R.S.V.P. card by Wednesday, Sept. 7, or if you have misplaced it, you may call the University’s R.S.V.P. line at ext. 4094. Please leave your name, the number of adults, the number of children ages eight and under and the number of children ages three and under. The pricing for the different age groups varies so be sure to share this information. 

How to Update Your Directory Information

The online Faculty/Staff Directory is available year-round to view the most up-to-date information on all current employees.  To ensure that your information is accurate, the application allows you to review and make any necessary changes needed. Please review and update your information by following the steps below:
  • Log into the my.scranton.edu portal
  • Click on the “University Links” tab
  • Locate the “Directories and Offices” channel
  • Click on the link “Faculty/Staff”
  • Click on the link “Update Your Directory Information” near top of page
This form will be available for updates year-round.  You will be able to see your changes in real time by using the Employee Directory search page.  

As announced last year, no printed version of the Faculty/Staff Directory will be distributed. Additional information will be made available on how to order a complete printed book when this feature is ready for use.

Technology on Your Own Terms Series Returns

Each semester, the Weinberg Memorial Library (WML) and the Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence (CTLE) offer a faculty and staff advancement series called "Technology on Your Own Terms." The series introduces University faculty and staff to emerging technologies in order to encourage innovation in the workplace and in the classroom. All faculty and staff members are welcome, but seats are limited, so please register for sessions you plan to attend at www.scranton.edu/ctleregistration (under Technology On Your Own Terms).

Two Technology On Your Own Terms sessions will be held this fall:

Changing Channels: The Next Generation of Television
Tuesday, Oct. 18, from noon – 1 p.m. in WML 305

In this workshop, we’ll look at new options in home entertainment and media, from HDTV and BluRay to streaming video. We’ll talk about what consumers should look for when purchasing new television screens and introduce new streaming services like Hulu Plus, Netflix and Apple TV. A light lunch will be provided. The workshop is taught by Jason Oakey of the Office of Instructional Technology.

Tools for Tablets: Apps, Sites, and Widgets for Tablet Computers
Wednesday, Nov. 16, from noon – 1 p.m. in WML 305

This workshop will discuss programs that will enhance your use of personal tablets, like the iPad, so that you can get the most out of these devices. We will look at file storage options, word processing programs, as well as social networks and e-reader applications. A light lunch will be provided. The workshop is taught by Sheli McHugh of the Weinberg Memorial Library.
