Fall Welcome Events
Below are some University events that traditionally mark the beginning of a new academic year. Please mark your calendar for all events and join us in welcoming one another to a new academic year.
The first events are Move-In Day for Freshman and the New Student Convocation. These will occur on Saturday, Aug. 27. Move-in Day runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in varies locations near the freshman dorms. If you have never seen Move-in Day, you should really try to see the well organized chaos that takes place. After everyone has moved in, you are invited to join a formal induction of the Class of 2015 into the Scranton Academic Community. The event will be held at 4 p.m. in the Byron Recreation Complex. For those of you who plan to join the academic procession, you will need to arrive at 3:15 in the hallway between the Long and Byron centers with your Academic Regalia. Hats are not required. The procession will begin at 3:45 p.m.
On Sunday, Aug. 28, everyone is welcomed to attend the All Student Welcome Mass. This is the first Mass of the academic calendar. The Mass will begin at 4 p.m. in the Byron Recreation Complex. Immediately following mass all members of the community are invited to attend the Welcome Class of 2015 BBQ on the Dionne Green Campus.
The next event is the Mass of the Holy Spirit. This will occur on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 11:30 a.m. in the Byron Recreation Complex. Note that again this year we will forego faculty robing for the Mass. Many faculty attend with their department colleagues or students, or are just dashing in from class. All should be aware that the Mass is for all members of the University community, not just Catholics. The Mass will be followed by a picnic on the DeNaples Center's patio.

Technology on Your Own Terms Series Returns
Each semester, the Weinberg Memorial Library (WML) and the Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence (CTLE) offer a faculty and staff advancement series called "Technology on Your Own Terms." The series introduces University faculty and staff to emerging technologies in order to encourage innovation in the workplace and in the classroom. All faculty and staff members are welcome, but seats are limited, so please register for sessions you plan to attend at www.scranton.edu/ctleregistration (under Technology On Your Own Terms).
Two Technology On Your Own Terms sessions will be held this fall:
Changing Channels: The Next Generation of Television
Tuesday, Oct. 18, from noon – 1 p.m. in WML 305
In this workshop, we’ll look at new options in home entertainment and media, from HDTV and BluRay to streaming video. We’ll talk about what consumers should look for when purchasing new television screens and introduce new streaming services like Hulu Plus, Netflix and Apple TV. A light lunch will be provided. The workshop is taught by Jason Oakey of the Office of Instructional Technology.
Tools for Tablets: Apps, Sites, and Widgets for Tablet Computers
Wednesday, Nov. 16, from noon – 1 p.m. in WML 305
This workshop will discuss programs that will enhance your use of personal tablets, like the iPad, so that you can get the most out of these devices. We will look at file storage options, word processing programs, as well as social networks and e-reader applications. A light lunch will be provided. The workshop is taught by Sheli McHugh of the Weinberg Memorial Library.
CGCE New Student Orientation this Sunday
The event ends at 3 p.m. with a social on the fifth floor of Brennan Hall. Please feel free to stop by and greet the University's new adult learners.
