    • Legacy Families to Gather During Move-In Weekend

      It is time for The University of Scranton to welcome the Class of 2015.  More than 70 of these students come from Legacy families.  On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Legacy families are invited to attend a special reception in Brennan Hall at 2 p.m., followed by a photo with Reverend Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., president of The University of Scranton. If you are a Legacy family with a son or daughter in the Class of 2015, please call 1-800-SCRANTON to R.S.V.P. for this event.

      Generations purple people will come together on campus for a reunion of Orientation Staff Alumni on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.

      Scranton Ranked on 'Friendliest Colleges' List

      The University of Scranton can add a new title to its list of national recognitions: one of the friendliest colleges in the nation. Last week, The Huffington Post published an article titled "The FRIENDLIEST Colleges," ranking the eight most pleasant universities, which included Scranton. "Sure, we all obsess over which college has the best food or academic decathlon team, but how about considering a more basic question – are the students here nice to each other?" asked the author.       John Cardone, M.D. ’82, Fairview, is a cardiovascular surgeon and member of the Cardio-Vascular and Thoracic Surgery group at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie.

      Albert A. Tielemans '85, a staff photographer at Sports Illustrated, had several photographs published in the magazine's July 18 issue highlighting the Philadelphia Phillies. 

      Andrea DeJesus ’87, G’11, Belmar, N.J., earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy from The University of Scranton in May 2011.

      Michael Hollinger ’93, Reading, opened his own law firm, Hollinger Law.

      Janine Edwards ’94, Honesdale, won the Republican and Democratic nomination in the primary for the position of Wayne County district attorney.

      Erin O’Malley-Stewart ’94, Reston, Va., has been named dean of Faculty at Bishop D.J. O’Connell High School in Arlington, Va. Erin completed her post-masters endorsement in School Administration at George Washington University.

      Joann Gallichio, DSc, ’97, Jacksonville, Fla., accepted a neuro faculty position at the University of St. Augustine.

      Michael Malia ’97 was certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a civil trial attorney, a distinction held by less than 2% of New Jersey attorneys. He also recently achieved the honor of being recognized as a Board certified civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

      Laura Zambuto ’00, Atlanta, Ga., received the Gerald R. Cooper Award for Excellence in Laboratory Safety and Bio-security at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Honor Awards. Laura is a safety and occupational health specialist with the CDC’s Influenza division.

      Matthew Youssef ’05, Baltimore, Md., is a recipient of The Daily Record’s 2011 20 in Their Twenties Award. This award recognizes young professionals in their 20s whose creativity and entrepreneurial spirit already are contributing to new energy in Maryland. Winners were selected on the basis of their professional accomplishments, community involvement and the impact of their achievements.

      Kelly Lewandowski ’06, Gettysburg, has been named head women’s basketball coach at Salisbury University.

      Tim Burke '84 has been appointed to the position of county attorney by the Carroll Board of County Commissioners. Burke has been serving in an acting capacity since April, following the resignation of Kimberly Millender. He has been a practicing attorney for 23 years.       Meg Hambrose '86 has been named the director of corporate and foundation relations at The University of Scranton. She is responsible for cultivating and sustaining relationships with corporations and foundations, while working to match university faculty and staff expertise with corporate interests.       Michael Dignam '87, president of Pacific Architects and Engineers (PAE), Inc., was featured in “Executive Spotlight” on www.executivebiz.com. To read more about Dignam, click here.

      Christopher McErlean '89, president of the Thoroughbred Racing Association, has been appointed to the American Horse Council Board of Trustees. McErlean, vice president of Racing for Penn National Gaming, Inc., was elected president of the TRA in February 2011. To read more about McErlean, click here.

      Daniel C. Rodgers '93, formerly the business administrator for the Southern Columbia Area School District in Catawissa, was appointed as Pennsbury School District’s new business administrator.       David M. Shope, D.O. '96, G'99 joined Dr. William R. Mitchell’s Southern Oncology practice in Huntersville area. Dr. Shope is moving to the Huntersville area from Winston Salem, where he completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.       Captain TJ Hromisin '05, a University of Scranton graduate who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) while serving in the Army, was the focus of Ed Ackerman’s column, titled “TJ is still TJ,” the Pittston Sunday Dispatch. To read more about Hromisin, click here.

      Katie L. German ’06 was among the 260 graduates awarded the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in June. Dr. German is continuing her medical training in emergency medicine at Lehigh Valley Health Network. To read more about Dr. German, click here.

      Kelly Lewandowski ’06, formerly an assistant women’s basketball coach at Gettysburg College, has been named head coach at Salisbury University. Since graduating from Scranton, Lewandowski has spent the last four seasons serving as an assistant coach, first with her alma mater in 2007-08 and for the last three at Gettysburg.       Melissa Lynne Thompson '07, recently earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Thompson is continuing her medical training in family practice at Mercy Suburban Hospital, Norristown. To read more about Thompson, click here.

      Gian Peter Vergnetti ’08, Aileen M. Monks ’10 G’11, Rebecca Bartley ’11, Melissa C. Beltz ’11, Kaitlyn L. Doremus ’11 and Philip J.       Just months after finishing her bachelor’s degree and softball career at The University of Scranton, Mia Collarini ’11 was named head coach of Scranton’s softball program, replacing Colleen Mahon Moyer, who resigned. Collarini, who is pursuing a Master of Science in school counseling, becomes the 12th head coach in the program's 35-year history. To read more about Collarini, click here and here.
