More than 50 students participated in the University’s 11th Annual Celebration of Student Scholars by displaying their work in poster presentations, as well as through oral presentations.

Senior marketing major Sara Dellecave of Scranton was surprised when her research of Fortune 500 companies in 38 industry groups showed only 49 percent used social media links on their corporate websites. She also found only 52 percent used facebook and 60 percent used twitter.

Dellecave was among more than 50 students who participated in the University’s 11th Annual Celebration of Student Scholars. Students displayed their work in poster presentations, as well as through oral presentations. Student work presented at the event, held in the DeNaples Center on May 3, included thesis research, studies conducted as part of the Faculty/Student Research Program (FSRP), results from a President’s Fellowship for Summer Research, and other projects carried out as independent study.

Dellecave worked with Satya Chattopadhyay, Ph.D., associate professor of marketing, for her research project, entitled “Use of Social Media in Marketing Efforts in Fortune 500 Companies.”

Also displayed at the event was an observational study of student eating habits based on gender. Sophomore health administration and human resources majors James Ranslow of Pepperell, Mass., and Oliver Strickland of Scranton and health administration and human resources faculty member Marybeth McDonough found that female students were far more likely to choose salads and fruit with their meals than males.

Other research presentations included “Bath Salts: Proposed Mechanism and Potential Treatments” by senior neuroscience major Cristina Rivera of Lansdale and George Gomez, Ph.D., associate professor of biology; “Comparative Study: Energy Costs of Walking in Overweight vs. Normal Weight College-Aged Individuals” by senior exercise science major Sinead Farrelly of River Ridge, N.J., and Ronald Deitrick, Ph.D., associate professor of exercise science and sport; and “Effects of anthropogenic carbon dioxide on the sea anemone Aiptasia pillid” by senior biology and philosophy double major Danielle Torres of Mountain Top and Janice Voltzow, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Biology Department; among others.

The Annual Celebration of Student Scholars is hosted by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, which assists faculty members in securing external and internal funding for research activities, provides workshops related to scholarly enterprises, and helps to develop and implement policies related to research at The University of Scranton.

In addition, the Weinberg Memorial Library is currently hosting its annual Faculty Scholarship Exhibit through Friday, May 27, in the fifth-floor Heritage Room.
