Philosophy Cafe Scheduled Wednesday

Phi Sigma Tau, the philosophy honor society, will be hosting a Philosophy Cafe on Wednesday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m., in Brennan Hall, room 228. Dr. William Parente of the Political Science Department will be presenting "The Politics of Literature: From Mishima to Al Aswany." Come for great discussion and free coffee, tea and pastries! Commissioning Ceremony Scheduled for May 28

On behalf of the Cadre and Cadets of the Military Sceince Department, we would like to cordially invite you to join us Saturday, May 28, for our annual commissioning ceremony. The ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center, located at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Mulberry Street. Please join us as we commission 18 young men and women into the United States Army, U.S. Army Reserve and Army National Guard. The event's guest speaker is U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Christopher Burne, who is also a 1980 graduate of Scranton. General Burne is the staff judge advocate, Headquarters Air Combat Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va.  As staff judge advocate, he is the principal legal adviser to the Commander Air Combat Command (ACC) and headquarters staff on all legal issues involving military justice, combat operations, civil litigation, environmental law, claims, international law and administrative law.

Expert on Jewish Identity to Lecture Thursday

The Weinberg Judaic Studies Institute of The University of Scranton will host a lecture by Leonard Saxe, Ph.D., a social psychologist, methodologist and policy analyst whose current research focuses on Jewish identity and engagement. Dr. Saxe will present “Israel and American Jewry: A New Relationship” on Thursday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall on campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Saxe is a professor of Jewish Community Research and Social Policy at Brandeis University, where he also chairs the Hornstein Program in Jewish Professional Leadership, directs the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies and directs the Steinhardt Social Research Institute.

At the Steinhardt Institute, he is leading a program that is investigating the size and characteristics of the American Jewish population. Among his recent publications, he is co-author of a 2008 book, “Ten Days of Birthright Israel: A Journey in Young Adult Identity,” the story of Birthright Israel, an intensive 10-day educational program designed to connect Jewish young adults to their heritage.

Professor Saxe is an author and/or editor of nearly 250 publications. He has been a Science Fellow for the United States Congress and was a Fulbright professor at Haifa University, Israel. In 1989, he was awarded the American Psychological Association’s prize for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest, Early Career.

Students, Alumni Team Up for Annual Street Sweep

Students and alumni joined forces on a recent spring Saturday to clean up litter from the Hill Section streets. Despite inclement weather, approximately 200 students and 20 alumni and their families participated in the annual Scranton Street Sweep on April 16. Indian Solo Artist to Perform Sunday

New Director's Workshop This Weekend

Zumba for Life Set for Wednesday

Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee are teaming up to raise awareness for cancer and money for the American Cancer Society. The “Zumba for Life” Zumba-thon will take place on Wednesday, May 11, in the John Long Center. The event begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening up at 6:30 p.m.

Student Zumba instructors have volunteered to lead the campus community in Zumba, the Latin-inspired dance fitness program to help raise money for cancer research and education in our communities. Registration is $5 or $3 for those who attended Relay For Life.

Pre-registration will take place from May 9-11 in the DeNaples Center, second floor.

Fair Trade Fair Slated for Thursday

Mark your calendar to attend The University of Scranton’s fourth annual Fair Trade Fair, scheduled Thursday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the Dionne Campus Green. (The rain location is the DeNaples Center's McIlhenny Ballroom.)
 
Purchase fair trade items from local and regional vendors, including handbags and jewelry and learn about the benefits of fair trade. This event is free and open to the public. IT Matters Spring 2011 Edition

The newest edition of IT Matters, a newsletter focused on the developments and activities of the Information Resources Division is now available. With rapid changes, we realize that there is a need to create an ongoing method of keeping our community up to date.
