Royals To Open NCAA Tournament Wednesday At Gettysburg

The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team, fresh off its first-ever Landmark Conference title, will look to make even more history when it takes on the Bullets of Gettysburg College in an NCAA Division III tournament first-round game this Wednesday, May 11, in Gettysburg.

The start time and ticket prices were to be announced late Monday. Live stats, courtesy of the Gettsyburg College Sports Information Office, will be available at the following web address: sidearmstats.com/gettysburg/mlax/xlive.htm.

The winner of Scranton/Gettysburg (11-6) will advance to face the winner of Colorado College (15-0)/Roanoke (14-2) on Saturday, May 14.

The Royals, now 9-7 under first-year head coach Jim Rogalski, will be making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament in the program's 25-year history. Gettysburg, which received a Pool C at-large berth after finishing runner-up in the Centennial Conference, is a battle-tested NCAA tournament team, having played in the last seven national championships and 20 times overall.

Nearly a month ago, Scranton was on the verge of failing to qualify for the Landmark Conference tournament.

With their backs against the wall, the Royals beat the top two teams in the conference on consecutive weekends – overcoming a three-goal fourth-period deficit to defeat Goucher College, 9-8 in overtime, at home and Catholic University, 12-9, at Cardinal Stadium in Washington, D.C. – to earn the number two seed in the Landmark tournament. Scranton then topped Catholic again, 12-9, on Wednesday, May 4, at home and downed top-seeded and defending champion Goucher, 12-8, on Saturday, May 7, in Towson, Md., to capture the title and earn an automatic NCAA bid.

Wednesday's meeting will be the ninth between the Royals and the Bullets and the first since 1994. Gettysburg holds a commanding 8-0 lead since the series started in 1987, which was Scranton's first year on the intercollegiate level.
