May 3, 2011: Student News

All Hail the Mayor of The University of Scranton!

The Foursquare Frenzy wrapped up on Friday with 15 students winning 25 prizes ranging from gift cards to concert tickets.
With six mayorships at Frenzy venues Mark Wehrenberg, a junior political science major, has won the title of the Mayor of The University of Scranton - Congratulations!!

As mayor, Mark will receive a unique sweatshirt that displays the Mayor's badge, as well as an iPod donated by Student Government.
Thanks to all who participated and to our prize donors who are listed at http://on.fb.me/hAPMNx.

Through this Foursquare Frenzy event, we hoped to increase participation in our new location-based social network and are pleased to report that daily check-ins have increased 220 percent from an average of just under 20 a day pre-frenzy to 64. The most check-ins on any single day was 123 on April 6, the day after the launch of the event was announced in Royal News and on our Facebook page.

While the Frenzy is over stay tuned to our tips on campus Foursquare venues to see announcements of events and other news from departments, clubs and organizations. To make sure you don't miss our tips, follow the University on Foursquare http://4sq.com/hFAUA5.

In addition, we will be partnering with downtown businesses over the summer to get them on board with specials for the University community. Stay tuned for more information!

Fulbright Scholarship Info Sessions Set for Today

Are you interested in spending the year following your graduation studying and/or teaching in another country? Are you a well-rounded individual with a good GPA? If so, a Fulbright Scholarship, the U.S. government's flagship international scholarship for U.S. citizens, may be in your future. Four of last year's seniors are now in Finland, Kenya, Indonesia and South Korea on their Fulbrights. Five of our current students (plus one recent graduate) have been named as national finalists for Fulbrights for 2011-2012, and are awaiting final word on their status.

Dr. Susan Trussler will present three information sessions for students interested in learning more about the Fulbright process on Tuesday, May 3, in the Rose Room (Brennan Hall, room 509.) Sessions will be at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 and 5 p.m. Each session will last about an hour and is geared for all classes (freshmen through graduate students.) Students graduating in 2011 and 2012 will start the formal application process in a few weeks. If you plan to apply in the 2011 cycle to spend 2012-2013 overseas you must attend one of these sessions. Interested juniors who currently are studying abroad should check out the Fulbright website, www.fulbrightonline.org/us, and contact Dr. Trussler via e-mail at trussler@scranton.edu.
