Electrical Shutdown Scheduled Good Friday

On Friday, April 22, there will be electrical work done on the University-owned, 12,470-volt electrical distribution to connect the new Mulberry Street dormitory and the new unified science center. The work is expected to take about 10 hours and will begin around 7 a.m. and finish at 5 p.m. Some other preventive maintenance and repair work will be done on our system at this time. The power shutdown will affect most of the campus for 10 hours and a smaller portion of the campus for two hours. The buildings included in each category are as follows:

Important Information Regarding Your Office Equipment:
Information Resources recommends that you power down your desktop PCs and all other computer equipment before leaving your office on Thursday, April 21. Cisco Voice over IP telephones will not be operational in any building where power is unavailable. Wireless services, RoyalCard building access and cable TV services throughout campus will not be available during the power shutdown. Most enterprise computing and Internet services will remain in service at the AMH Data Center.

IT Forum Slated May 5

Join us at the next IT Forum set for Thursday, May 5, in Brennan Hall, room 509, for an important and interesting look at Identity Finder. This easy-to-use program will allow the entire University of Scranton community to secure the very important information we have stored on our computers.

Identity Finder looks for those files we keep that may be targets for identity theft and other malicious acts. Files holding Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, driver license numbers, bank account data, passwords and more, can be secured to prevent any unauthorized use of your files or data belonging to the University.
         
Jack Williams, IT Services Training Specialist, will be presenting. All University personnel are encouraged to attend, and lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by e-mailing ITServices@scranton.edu by Monday, May 2.

Writing Center Consultants Receive Grant

Writing Center consultants have received a $1,500 spring semester diversity initiatives grant from the Office of Equity and Diversity. Student writing consultants Nicholas Caselli, Presidential Scholar and member of the class of 2012, and Karen Waldeck, 2009 recipient Award for Excellence in Theology, developed the proposal with faculty sponsor Mary J. Burkhart.
Funding will be used to sponsor Writers Cross Borders, two Writing Center events examining perspectives on the International Student Writer. Events will take place in May 2011.

Gospel Extravaganza Set for April 30

Scripture of Scranton’s – Gospel Extravaganza will host several musical performances, featuring Skyhook Mandate, Men & Women for Octaves and Members of Music Ministry. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from 1-3 p.m. in the Moskovitz Theater, DeNaples Center, fourth floor. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the American Red Cross Japanese Relief Efforts. This event is sponsored by Scripture of Scranton (S.O.S). Participate in Today's 'powerLESS Hour'

Environmental sustainability is a growing issue in our world. Natural resources are being used at record rates. Our future depends on raising awareness of global sustainability. Show your support for our planet and its future by unplugging all unnecessary electronics for ONE HOUR and join in the fight against the global environmental changes of our planet.

The "powerLESS Hour" event is scheduled for today, April 19, from 5 to 6 p.m.

Help raise awareness for sustainability issues. It’s more than just saving energy. It’s about saving the world. This event is initiated by a University of Scranton Senior Seminar Class.

Annual Book and Plant Sale Set for April 30

The University of Scranton’s Weinberg Memorial Library will hold its annual Book and Plant Sale on for Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday, May 1, from noon until 4 p.m. in the Scranton Heritage Room on the fifth floor of the library. Book prices begin at $1. Flowering plants and tag sale items will also be sold. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library Endowment, which supports library collections and services. For more information, click here.

Eleventh Annual Celebration of Student Scholars

The University of Scranton will hold its Eleventh Annual Celebration of Student Scholars on Tuesday, May 3, from 1-4:30 p.m. This event will celebrate both undergraduate and graduate student scholarship by featuring their work through either a physical display of posters or oral presentations. The poster display and oral presentations will be held in DeNaples Center, fourth floor.

Please join us in celebrating our students' outstanding research accomplishments. Student scholarly work includes thesis research (e.g. for a graduate degree, for the honor’s program), research conducted as part of the Faculty Student Research Program, or resulting from a President's Fellowship for Summer Research, and undergraduate or graduate research or other scholarly projects carried out as independent study. Fair Trade Fair Slated for May 12

Mark your calendar to attend The University of Scranton’s fourth annual Fair Trade Fair, scheduled Thursday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the Dionne Campus Green. (The rain location is the DeNaples Center's McIhenny Ballroom.)
 
Purchase fair trade items from local and regional vendors, including handbags and jewelry and learn about the benefits of fair trade. This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by The University of Scranton Fair Trade Club. For more information,contact Marie Perry at perrym4@scranton.edu.

Diversity Fair Set for May 6

The third annual Diversity Festival will occur on Friday, May 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. on the Dionne Campus Green. (The event's rain location is the DeNaples Center's McIhenny Ballroom). Residence halls, the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), members of the International Club and United Colors Organization, academic programs and classes, as well as faculty and staff members will host an individual table that will highlight a different country or global diversity-related theme. These tables will include music, food, interactive activities, handouts and possibly representatives from the specific country to engage the participants. Faculty and staff members teaching related classes (Department of World Languages and Cultures, Asian Studies Concentration, etc.) will also be encouraged to work alongside students in hosting a table. 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for Breast Cancer

Enjoy playing basketball? Want to play for a good cause? Then join in the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Thinking Pink 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, set for Sunday, May 1, in the Byron Recreation Center. The event will begin at noon. The cost is $5 per player (four players per team). Prizes will be awarded to the top two teams. All proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The newest edition of IT Matters, a newsletter focused on the developments and activities of the Information Resources Division is now available. With rapid changes, we realize that there is a need to create an ongoing method of keeping our community up to date. IT Matters will provide our faculty, staff and students with information on current applications, planned changes to technologies and new initiatives.
