Professor’s Research Shows Walnuts as ‘Top Nut’

A new scientific study by University of Scranton Chemistry Professor Joe Vinson, Ph.D., positions walnuts in the No. 1 slot among a family of foods that lay claim to being among Mother Nature’s most nearly perfect packaged foods: tree and ground nuts.

In a report presented this week at the 241st National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society in Anaheim, Cal., Dr. Vinson’s analysis shows that walnuts have a combination of more healthful antioxidants and higher quality antioxidants than any other nut.

Eleventh Annual Celebration of Student Scholars

The University of Scranton will hold its Eleventh Annual Celebration of Student Scholars on Tuesday, May 3, from 1-4:30 p.m. This event will celebrate both undergraduate and graduate student scholarship by featuring their work through either a physical display of posters or oral presentations. The poster display and oral presentations will be held in DeNaples Center, fourth floor.

Please join us in celebrating our students' outstanding research accomplishments. Please direct questions to Eloise Libassi at 941-6301.

Foreign Film Series Hosts Screening Friday

Please join us for the Foreign Film Series screening of the Canadian comedy "1981" on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in room 305 of the Weinberg Memorial Library. Dr. Marzia Caporale will lead a discussion following the film.

Film Movement describes "1981" as a cheeky, semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale about 11-year-old Ricardo, who, struggling with his family's move and a new school, decides to become a liar. The film is directed by Ricardo Trogi and is in French with English subtitles.

This event is open to faculty, staff, students and the public, but seating is limited, so contact Sharon Finnerty at (570) 941-6330 or finnertys2@scranton.edu for reservations.

Street Sweep 2011 Set for April 16

Four years ago a tradition was started by Student Government called the Scranton Street Sweep. It was a way for University students to take ownership of our Hill Section; a way to better include that area of our community in campus life by making a positive impact on it.

Student Government officially announces the Scranton Street Sweep 2011 to be held Saturday, April 16, at 1 p.m. beginning in the Madison Parking Lot, located in the lower parking lot on the corner of Madison and Mulberry.

This year, similar to last year’s spring Street Sweep, we will be partnering with the Scranton Alumni Chapter to help partake in the Alumni Day of Service. This is a great opportunity for our school community to work hand-in-hand with our alumni.

We need as many Scranton students as possible. The Hill Section is part of our community, and we are responsible for it.

To sign up for the Street Sweep, please visit Tricia Cummings in the Student Forum, Denaples Center, room 205S. There will be a sign-up sheet outside of her office for clubs to sign up on. The normal service approval procedure will still follow though. We are expecting a large turnout for this, so sign up as soon as possible.

Stop by the Student Government office located in the Student Forum or e-mail Patricia Cermignano, director of communications, at cermignanop2@scranton.edu with any questions or concerns you may have.

Donate your Prom Dress to Cinderella's Closet

Have a formal or prom dress taking up valuable room in your closet? Donate it to Cinderella's Closet!

Sponsored by the Junior League of Scranton, Cinderella’s Closet is an annual event scheduled on Thursday April 14, at the Scranton Cultural Center's Shopland Hall. The event helps high school girls have an opportunity to go to the prom in a dress of their choice and feel like the “belle of the ball” — all for less than $10.

With the cost of formal attire increasing, students and parents are likely to have difficulty affording this important night. The junior league believes students shouldn’t suffer the consequences of these growing prices.

Dresses should be of modern style, clean and in good condition — no 80s dresses please. Cinderella’s Closet also accepts formal footwear, jewelry and hair accessories. Bring back your dresses after Spring Break! Donations can be dropped off in The Community Outreach Office now through Friday, April 1. Our office is located in DeNaples Center, room 205B. For more information, contact Ellen Judge at judgee2@scranton.edu.
