The Late Peter A. Carlesimo to be Honored May 6

The late Peter A. Carlesimo was many things to many people at The University of Scranton.

During a distinguished career that spanned nearly 25 years, he served as head coach of the football (1944-1960), basketball (1944-1946; 1951-1955), and cross-country (1961-1968) programs, as well as serving as director of athletics (1953-1968).  And to the countless number of student-athletes, faculty and staff, and those in the community that he came in contact with, he was more than just a coach and an administrator: he was a friend, humanitarian and father-figure.

His contributions to the rich history of Scranton athletics will be formally recognized at the Royals Annual Award Dinner on Friday, May 6, beginning at 6 p.m. in the William J. Byron, S.J., Recreation Complex. This dinner has been established to celebrate intercollegiate athletics at the university, to annually honor a person who has made special contributions to the athletics department, and to raise funds for the athletics department and the student-athletes that it serves.

Carlesimo’s son, P.J., a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and a highly-successful coach on the collegiate and professional level for more than three decades, will deliver the keynote address.

For more information, please visit http://www.scranton.edu/royalsawarddinner. Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased by contacting Robert Davis at 570-941-6667, or by e-mail at robert.davis@scranton.edu. Corporate and special ticket packages are also available.

Baseball (7-11/3-2 Landmark Conference)
After inclement weather washed out one game, the Royals finally returned to the diamond on Sunday, April 3, and split a Landmark Conference 7-inning doubleheader against Susquehanna University at Connell Park.

In the opener, junior pitcher Rocky Sawyer (Bethlehem/Liberty) struck out five and allowed only two earned runs in six innings and senior David Giglio (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier) hit two doubles and drove in four runs as the Royals held off a late rally to defeat the Crusaders, 6-5.  Senior catcher Jeff Manahan (Morris Plains, N.J./Morristown) hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field in the sixth inning.

The Royals were one out away from a victory in the second game, but Susquehanna took advantage of two errors and a passed ball in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, then won it in the eighth on a two-run home run. Scranton got another solid pitching effort, this time from sophomore Robert Della Polla (Havertown/St. Joseph’s Preparatory), who went 7 and 1/3 innings and struck out seven batters.  Sophomore Richard Pohl (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) had two of the Royals’ six hits.

Golf (4-0)
Sophomore Chris Schank (Dunmore/Scranton Preparatory) carded a five-over-par 77 to lead the men’s golf team to a tie for 6th place in the 19-team field at the Moravian College Spring Invitational held at the Woodstone Country Club in Danielville on Thursday, March 31.

Schank finished fourth overall in the chase for the individual title, just four strokes behind eventual winner Dan Drazen of Rutgers-Camden.  As a team, the Royals finished with an 18-hole total of 331 strokes.

Men’s Lacrosse (5-4/1-0 Landmark Conference)
The men’s lacrosse team bounced back from a 12-8 loss to Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday, March 30, by downing the Merchant Marine Academy, 17-13, on Saturday, April 2, in its Landmark Conference opener in Bayville, N.Y.

Against Franklin & Marshall, the Royals were held scoreless for nearly 27 minutes, which allowed the Diplomats to erase a 3-2 first-period deficit and build up an 8-3 lead, which it never relinquished.  Senior attacker Sean Coleman (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and junior midfielder Mike Rufo (Broomall, Pa./Haverford School) led Scranton with two goals apiece.

In Saturday’s win over the Merchant Marine Academy, Rufo tied his career-high with five goals and sophomore midfielder Dillon McInerney (Hawthorne, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and junior attacker Daniel Slade (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) contributed three apiece as the Royals posted their first win over the Mariners since an 8-6 victory on March 29, 2008, at Fitzpatrick Field.

Women’s Lacrosse (7-2/1-0 Landmark Conference)
The women’s lacrosse team extended its season-long winning streak to seven games with victories over previously unbeaten New Paltz, 12-8, on Wednesday, March 30, and Goucher, 14-12, on Sunday, April 3.

First-year attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) played a major role in the Royals’ win over New Paltz, scoring two of her game-high four goals in the opening four minutes of play.  Scranton also received two goals and two assists from senior attackerCarolyn Pryor (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame).

In Sunday’s win over Goucher, senior defender Katie Slade (Buckingham/Central Bucks East) scored a career-high five goals, including two in the final 17 minutes of play as the Royals held off a late rally by the Gophers to win their third Landmark Conference season-opening game in four years.

In two games, sophomore goalie Kathleen Smart (Hatboro/Archbishop Wood) was credited with 16 saves.

Softball (9-5/2-0 Landmark)
The softball team swept three doubleheaders during the period, taking two games from Cedar Crest College on Tuesday, March 29, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, two from Penn State-Hazleton on Thursday, March 31, in nearby Jessup, and two from the Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday, April 3, in Kings Point, New York.

Senior Annie Zeleniak (Taylor/Scranton Preparatory) continued her torrid hitting, banging out 15 hits, including three home runs and six doubles, and drove in 21 runs, including 12 in the series with the Merchant Marine Academy.

Junior pitcher Christine Capalbo (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) won all three of her starting assignments to improve her team-leading record to 6-1 on the season.  She also lowered her ERA to 1.67.

Capalbo tossed a no-hitter in an 8-0 victory in five innings against Penn State-Hazleton and allowed just three hits in a 16-0 win over the Merchant Marine Academy.

Men’s Tennis (5-3/2-0 Landmark)
The men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches by sweeping a Landmark Conference road trip on Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3.

Behind two wins apiece from senior Carl Caceres (Teaneck, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and sophomores Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit/Scranton Preparatory) and Joe Morra (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory), and freshman David Teres (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon), the Royals downed Catholic University, 6-2, in Washington, D.C.

Five players – Cacares, McGurrin, Morra, Teres and sophomore Mike Pannone (Maplewood, N.J./Seton Hall Preparatory) – won two matches apiece on Sunday as Scranton downed Juniata, 9-0, in Huntingdon.

Women’s Tennis (3-7/1-1 Landmark)
The women’s tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak with a 7-2 victory over Juniata College on Sunday, April 3, in Huntingdon.

The Royals received two wins apiece from seniors Kelly Costello (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) and Danielle Wylie (Schnecksville/Parkland), junior Caitlin Ehly (Philadelphia/Saint Basil Academy) and first-year player Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown/Central Bucks East).

The previous day, Scranton built up a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but Catholic University came back to win four of the six singles matches to pull out a 5-4 victory in Washington, D.C. Wylie recorded two wins for the Royals.
