Here is a weekly wrap-up of University of Scranton athletic events. To see the full Royal Review release, visit http://matrix.scranton.edu/athletics/gnmar282011.shtml.

Baseball (6-10/2-1 Landmark Conference)
The Royals lost eight of nine games during a Spring Break trip to Ft. Myers, Fla.

Two of Scranton’s losses were decided by one run and two others by three runs.

Sophomore pitcher Robert Della Polla (Havertown/St. Joseph’s Preparatory) improved to 2-0 on the season by striking out six and allowing only two earned runs to pick up a complete game victory as the Royals defeated Western Connecticut, 4-3, in the second game of a 7-inning doubleheader on March 24. In that game, senior Jeff Manahan (Morris Plains, N.J./Morristown) drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Senior Chris Stallone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) played in all nine games and hit safely in each one to extend his hitting streak to 12 straight games.

Golf (4-0)
The men’s golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule on Friday, March 25, by defeating FDU-Florham, Stevens Institute of Technology and Centenary College at the Neshanic Valley Country Club in Branchburg, N.J.

Sophomore Justin Riley (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) earned medalist honors with a season-low round of 77 as the Royals shot a four-score total of 324. Scranton also received an 80 from freshman Brandon Gano (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and an 81 from sophomore Chris Schank (Dunmore/Scranton Preparatory).

Men’s Lacrosse (4-3/0-0 Landmark Conference)
For the second time this year, the men’s lacrosse team took on a nationally-ranked team on Saturday, March 26, dropping a 21-7 decision to second-ranked Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md.

The Royals, which had a two-game winning streak snapped, was led by sophomore attacker Taylor Nelson (Chester Springs/Downingtown East) with two goals, senior attacker Sean Coleman (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) had a goal and four assists, and freshman attacker Gus Sturm (Devon/Conestoga), senior attackers Robert Pantages (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and Daniel Slade (Doylestown/Central Bucks East), and junior midfielder Matt Dachowski (Doylestown/Central Bucks South) contributed one goal apiece.

All three goalies on the Royal roster saw action. Senior Jeremy Dowiak (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris) started and made a game-high 12 saves in nearly 41 minutes of action.

Women’s Lacrosse (5-2/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The women’s lacrosse team extended its season-long winning streak to five with a pair of victories during a Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla.

On Monday, March 21, senior attacker Caroline Pryor (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame) and junior attacker Kaela Mahon (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J./Saint Rose) scored three goals apiece as the Royals downed Wellesley College, 10-7. Scranton also received a goal and an assist from sophomore attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington/Central Bucks South) and a goal apiece from first-year attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional), sophomore midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and senior defender Katie Slade (Buckingham/Central Bucks East).

The following day, Sullivan scored eight goals—the third highest single-game total in Royals’ history—and Pryor finished with four goals, including the 100th of her career, and four assists as Scranton defeated Southern Maine, 19-5. Pryor’s seven goals this past week gives her 101 for her career.

Softball (3-5/0-0 Landmark)
The softball team went 2-4 during the period to compete an 8-game Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla.

Senior Annie Zeleniak (Taylor/Scranton Preparatory) led the Royals on the offensive end with 13 hits in 22 at-bats (.591). In a 6-3 loss in nine innings to Manchester (Ind.), she tied her season-high with four hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.  She also had two hits and drove in three runs in a 6-3 victory to Frostburg St.

In a 6-1 victory over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), first-year pitcher Christine Capalbo (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) struck out five and scattered six hits in picking up the complete game victory.   Sophomore Samantha Boccolini (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) came on in relief of Capalbo and did not allow a run over the final 3.1 innings in the victory over Frostburg St.

Men’s Tennis (3-3/0-0 Landmark)
The men’s tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule by splitting four matches during a Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.

The Royals defeated the University of Sioux Falls, 6-3, and Nebraska Wesleyan, 8-1, but dropped matches to St. Thomas (Minn.), 9-0, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 8-1.

Women’s Tennis (2-6/0-0 Landmark)

Senior Danielle Wylie (Schnecksville/Parkland) recorded the Royals’ lone point with a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory over Katy Bender in an 8-1 loss to Centre College (Kentucky) on March 22.  Junior Caitlin Ehly (Philadelphia/Saint Basil Academy) downed Mary Frassetto, 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 1-0 (11-9) at the number six singles in Scranton’s 8-1 defeat to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on March 23.

The Royals won two doubles matches to build up a 2-1 lead over Nebraska Wesleyan, but the Prairie Wolves won five of six singles matches, including four decided in the third set, to pull out a 6-3 victory.

Scranton’s wins in doubles were recorded by first-year players Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) and Devon Cohen (Ambler/Hatboro-Horsham) and junior Elisha Connell (Orangeburg, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and Wylie, while its win in singles was recorded by senior Kelly Costello (Branchburg, N.J./High Point Regional).
