Students from One of the Nation’s Premier Music Conservatories to Perform with Scranton Singers
Cheryl Y. Boga, director of Performance Music at The University of Scranton (left), and guest conductor Mark Gould will present the Manhattan School of Music Brass Orchestra and The University of Scranton Singers at a concert on Sunday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center.
The evening’s program will include the premiere of an arrangement of Anthony Barfield’s “Gospel Trilogy” for brass orchestra and mixed choir, including three movements: “Amazing Grace,” “What a Mighty God We Serve,” and “Jesus on the Mainline.” Also being premiered is a new setting of Marcus Printup’s “How Great Thou Art,” for brass orchestra and mixed choir, a piece that was originally commissioned as part of The University of Scranton’s World Premiere series in 2009.
The Manhattan School of Music Brass Orchestra, founded in 2009, is a 32-piece ensemble made up of members of the Manhattan School of Music’s Brass and Percussion departments. The school, one of the nation’s premier music conservatories, has been providing programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level for more than 85 years. Consisting of more than 800 students from across the globe, the school prides itself on the high caliber of not only its students, but also its faculty members.
The Brass Orchestra will be directed by its conductor and founder, Mark Gould. Retired from his 30-year tenure as co-principal trumpet of The Metropolitan Opera, Gould is chair of the brass department at the Manhattan School of Music, and continues to serve on the faculty at The Juilliard School, a position he has held for more than 20 years. Renowned for his trumpet playing and teaching, Gould has appeared as principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic, and has recorded and performed with ensembles such as the Canadian Brass and Empire Brass, as well as many symphony orchestras throughout the world. He also serves as the director for The New York Trumpet Ensemble. His body of work as a soloist and recording artist includes more than 40 performances on PBS as part of “Live at Lincoln Center” broadcasts and Grammy-winning recordings with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. His students have garnered spots in many of the most highly acclaimed major orchestras and chamber ensembles both nationally and internationally.
