Applications Now Available for Class Night Awards

Attention Class of 2011: applications now available for the Division of Student Affairs - Class Night Awards.

Since 1992, the Division of Student Affairs has presented two awards at Class Night, the Lawrence A. Mann Award and the Student Life Award. The awards are presented to selected graduating seniors. Applications and nominations are open to any undergraduate member of the senior class. Self-nominations are acceptable. A committee comprised of staff members within the division of Student Affairs selects the recipients of the awards. Applications are now available in the Student Affairs Office DeNaples 201. Final applications are due April 15, 2011. Please contact Student Affairs if you have any questions at 941-7680.

Lawrence A. Mann Award
Professor Lawrence A. Mann was a beloved faculty member of The University of Scranton community for over twenty years.  A professor of Latin, Dr. Mann was also a lay Resident Counselor for Denis Edward and Hannan Halls. His personal warmth, devotion to the institution and sensitivity to students along with a willingness to help plan and participate in student activities throughout the school year ensured his popularity on campus. He was a refined, kind, devout and outgoing person who served as a wonderful role model for students. The award is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated extraordinary involvement in student activities and through her/his contributions is a role model to fellow students.

Student Life Award
The Student Life Award is presented annually to the student who has worked diligently to improve the quality of life at The University of Scranton during his/her career.

On-Campus LSAT Workshop Scheduled This Spring

An on-campus workshop for students preparing to take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) will be offered this spring starting on Thursday, March 31. The workshop will extend over eight sessions, all on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with the final session on Thursday, May 12. The registration fee of $250 includes all workshop materials, including copies of The Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests and the newly published Official LSAT Handbook. Registration forms with complete schedule of sessions can be obtained at the History Department office, 251 St. Thomas Hall or from Dr. Frank Homer, Professor Emeritus. Registrants should register if possible before the beginning of the spring break, although registrations will be accepted up to Monday, March 28.

Scholars in Service Educational Meeting

An AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to PA Information Session will be held on Thursday, March 31 at noon in the Moskovitz Theater on the 4th floor of DeNaples.  Come and find out how to get an educational award for doing a year of service during college during the 2011-2012 academic year!  Educational awards for 2010-2011 were $1,132 for 300 hours of service or $1,415 for 450 hours of service. Theology Honor Society Seeking New Members

Undergraduate or graduate students who meet the established criteria are invited to apply for membership in the University of Scranton chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa, the National Honor Society for Religious Studies/Theology. Criteria include the completion of 12 credits in Theology/Religious Studies with the average of all your theology courses at least 3.5 and your overall GPA at least 3.0.

Please contact Marie Gaughan, Theology department secretary, at 941-6309 for more information or to pick up an application. The Theology Department is located in St. Thomas Hall, room 361. Applications must be completed by March 31.

Mr. and Miss Scranton Competition!

The Mr. and Miss Scranton Competition is scheduled for Thursday, March 31, at 8 p.m. in the DeNaples Center, Moskovitz Theater.Come support our talented contestants, the funny co-emcees and guest judges! Foreign Language National Honor Society Enrolling New Members

The Theta Iota Chapter of the Foreign Language National Honor  Society, Alpha Mu Gamma, is in the process of enrolling new members.  Requirements are the following: a) for full membership, two consecutive A’s or A-’s in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and  Conversation (311 - 312) level or above; b) for associate membership, two consecutive B+’s or better in language courses (in the same language) at the Composition and Conversation (311-312) level or above, or a noteworthy academic record in more than one language. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. All applications are individually screened. Only completed semester grades are considered. Application forms are available from Joyce Knott, Department Secretary, 301 O’Hara  Hall, as well as from other departmental faculty.

The induction ceremony and luncheon will take place in The DeNaples Center 405 on Tuesday, May 3, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Inductees will receive their certificates of membership and society pins; graduating seniors will receive their gold honors cords.

Deadline for applications and payment of fee is Tuesday, April 19. The membership fee of $50 includes the luncheon. Applications without fees will not be considered. Please make checks (cash accepted also) to The University of Scranton and leave completed applications with Ms. Knott, O’Hara 301.
