Royal Review – Weekly Athletics Update

Here is a weekly wrap-up of University of Scranton athletic events. To see the full Royal Review release, visit http://matrix.scranton.edu/athletics/gnmar212011.shtml.

Baseball (5-2/2-1 Landmark Conference)
The Royals got two solid pitching efforts from sophomores Robert Della Polla (Havertown/St. Joseph’s Regional) and Corey Gorman (Laflin/Coughlin) to take two of three games from the Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference series on March 19-20 in Kings Point, N.Y.

Della Polla picked up the first win of his career by striking out five and scattering five hits in six innings as Scranton won the second game of Saturday’s 7-inning doubleheader, 13-4. On Sunday, Gorman pitched 8 and 2/3 innings, struck out nine, allowed only one earned run, and walked only two batters as the Royals held off a ninth-inning rally to win 4-3.

Senior David Giglio (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier) had four hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in six runs in Saturday’s win and senior Chris Stallone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) hit .636 (7-for-11), with an RBI and seven stolen bases, in the series.

The Royals’ 5-2 start is its best since 1990.

Men’s Lacrosse (4-2/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The men’s lacrosse team opened the period with a 15-11 victory over Hartwick College on March 16 at Fitzpatrick Field.

Sophomore Trevor Nelson (Chester Springs/Downingtown East) scored four goals, senior JP Barton (North Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) had three, and senior Keenan Dowd (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) and sophomore Collin Kaval (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) chipped in a pair for the Royals, who held the Hawks scoreless in the second period to break a 4-4 tie en route to a 7-4 lead at halftime and a 12-7 margin entering the fourth period.

On Saturday, March 19, Scranton posted its fourth straight win over cross-town rival Marywood University with a 9-6 victory at Pacer Field in Scranton.

The Pacers cut the Royals’ three-goal halftime lead down to one three times in the second half, the last of which came with 58 seconds left in the third period. Scranton then out-scored Marywood, 3-1, in the final period of play.

Sophomore Dillon McInerney (Hawthorne, N.J./Bergen Catholic) led the way with three goals and senior Robert Pantages (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and junior Daniel Slade (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) tallied two apiece. Nelson came up with a key play late in the fourth period by causing a turnover and scoring a goal on the ensuing possession to give Scranton a three-goal lead with 1:57 remaining.

In two games, senior goalie Jeremy Dowiak (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris) finished with 22 saves, including a season-high of 13 in the win over Hartwick.

Women’s Lacrosse (3-2/0-0 Landmark Conference)
Two quick starts lifted the Royals to wins over Neumann University and Oneonta State during the period.

On Wednesday, March 16, sophomore midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), first-year attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and senior Carolyn Pryor (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame) jump-started a 10-0 run with a goal apiece in the opening 2:19 as the Royals cruised to a 12-2 halftime lead en route to a 19-7 win over Neumann in Aston.

Junior attacker Kaela Mahon (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J./Saint Rose) paced a balanced attack with four goals, sophomore attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington/Central Bucks South) finished with three goals and four assists, Sullivan had three goals and an assist, and DePaolera chipped in two goals and three assists.

On Friday, March 19, Scranton won 9 of 12 draw controls and out-scored Oneonta State, 20-7, to build up a 9-2 halftime lead on its way to a 15-7 victory.  Senior defender Katie Slade (Buckingham/Central Bucks East) paced the Royals with four goals, Pryor had three goals and two assists, and DePaolera contributed three goals.

During this current three-game winning streak, the Royals have out-scored their opponents, 51-21.

Softball (1-1/0-0 Landmark)
The Royals lifted the lid on their 2011 season with a split of its first two games during an eight-game spring break trip to Clermont, Fla., on Sunday, March 20.

Scranton managed just four hits in dropping a 6-0 decision to Eastern Connecticut in its opener, but came back to defeat Kalamazoo College, 13-1.

Junior Tia Dimou (Center Valley/Southern Lehigh) belted a double and senior Mia Collarini (Jessup/Valley View), sophomore Kaitlyn Frazza (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and junior Ashley Vosilla (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) each had a single against Eastern Connecticut.

Senior Annie Zeleniak (Taylor/Scranton Preparatory) led the way over Kalamazoo, smacking a home run and a double and finishing with four hits and seven RBI.

Women’s Tennis (2-3/0-0 Landmark)
The women’s tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule on Tuesday, March 14, with a 7-2 loss to Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown.

First-year player Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) and junior Elisha Connell (Orangeburg, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) recorded the Royals’ wins at the number one and two singles, respectively. Boccuzzi downed Alena Marani, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at one and Connell topped Allison Burkhardt , 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) at two.
