More than 100 Students Make Royal Connections at Leadership Conference
Hosted by the Office of Student Activities and Orientation, the event provided students with a chance to share their knowledge and learn from each others’ experiences.
“We were hoping to provide students with an experience that was unique to their individual leadership development,” said Shannon Murphy Fennie, director of student activities and orientation, who noted that attendees including student athletes, resident assistants, orientation assistants, club and organization leaders, members of student government and leaders from University Ministries, as well as students who were not involved in any official capacity.
Participants gained professional insight from keynote speaker Tony D’Angelo, founder of “Collegiate EmPowerment” – a nationally recognized nonprofit educational firm dedicated to empowering college students and higher education professionals.
D’Angelo’s opening and closing talks focused on personal leadership. He stressed the importance of embracing and developing one’s own talents and values to better prepare themselves as successful leaders. He said students need to do this before they can lead others.
Throughout the conference, attendees chose from a variety of presentations, or “breakout sessions,” covering a range of leadership topics including effective use of social media, the value of group diversity, and self-reflection practices. “Rediscover Your Child Within,” “Focus on Progress, Not Perfection,” and “Life in a Fishbowl: A Student Leader’s Perspective,” were just a few of the interactive and hands-on presentations.
“The breakout sessions were very informative and there were so many options to choose from,” said senior Kelly desRosiers of Highland Falls, N.Y. “Overall, it was a great experience and something I would recommend to almost anyone because leadership and the ideals we discussed are things that anyone could apply to their life and career.”
