March 15, 2011: General News

IT Forum Scheduled Thursday

The next IT Forum, scheduled Thursday, March 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Brennan Hall, room 509, will highlight the use of Argos for Banner reporting. It will appeal to those on campus who utilize the Banner Reports menu or BI Query on a regular basis to pull data from the Oracle database, and turn it into meaningful reports for themselves or their managers.  We’ll present a brief history of the Argos project on campus, why it was chosen as a reporting tool, and then demonstrate the progress we’ve made towards its implementation in the production ERP environment.  Come learn about using Argos for simple reports, as well as data blocks and OLAP cubes.

The presenters are Connie Wisdo, ITDA director, and Jeff O’Malley, ITDA business applications analyst.

Lunch will be served and there will be prizes!!  All members of our community are encouraged to attend.  Registration is required by Tuesday, March 15, by e-mailing ITServices@scranton.edu.

SJLA External Speaker Series Begins Thursday

The Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Program (SJLA) will host the first lecture of the SJLA External Speaker Series on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m. in Brennan Hall, room 228. Dr. Neil A. Manson will present "The Fine Tuning Argument for the Existence of God."

The Fine-Tuning Argument (FTA) is a variant of the Design Argument for the existence of God. In this talk the evidence of fine-tuning is explained and the Fine-Tuning Argument is presented. Then two objections are covered: that fine-tuning can be explained in terms of the existence of multiple universes (the “multiverse”) plus the operation of the anthropic principle, and that fine-tuning is not actually improbable.

The event is free. All are welcome. For more information please contact Dr. Daniel Haggerty, haggertyd2@scranton.edu.

Food is Gold this St. Patrick’s Day

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is working to help fight hunger in our local community by participating in the 2011 Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge. As part of this challenge, the Scranton SIFE team has pledged to meet the goal of collecting 5,000 cans of non-perishable food items. In this competition, one can of food equals one pound which also equals one dollar. 100% of the proceeds from this challenge go directly to the on campus Alice V. Leahy Food Pantry.

SIFE needs YOUR help in reaching our goal. Various departments throughout campus have volunteered to host collection bins in their department. We ask that you make a donation of non-perishable food items and canned goods between Tuesday, March 15, through Friday, March 18, at noon. Collection bins are located in the following departments: Biology Department, CAS Advising Center, Student Forum, University Relations Department and Information Resources AMH 008. Hopefully we will have more offices volunteer to become host sites for can collection.

If you are unable to get to one of these collection bins, please contact Ariel Ruggiero at ruggieroa2@scranton.edu to schedule a pick-up time.

The Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge is a competition sponsored by Campbell Soup Company that challenges SIFE teams in Canada, Mexico and the United States to raise awareness of hunger, translate awareness to action in the form of urgent hunger relief and empower those in need to defeat the cycle of hunger.

Debate Society Hosts Event Wednesday

The University of Scranton's Debate Society will host a debate between the major political parties. The debate, which is open to all students, faculty, administration, and staff, free of charge, will take place on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the Brennan Hall auditorium (Brennan 228). This is an opportunity for members of the University community to hear the distinctly different philosophies between the College Democrats, the College Republicans and the Young Americans for Liberty.

“We feel this is a unique opportunity to hear all sides of the political spectrum on some of the most important political issues of the day. The Debate Society would like to provide a forum for members of the University community to hear members of each political party's stances on key issues in the political world,” explained Don Fenocchi, treasurer for The University of Scranton Debate Society. "This debate will give unique insight into the ideologies of the political parties."

Last semester the University of Scranton's Debate Society hosted a debate betweenthe College Republicans and College Democrats where both groups presented theirparty's views and philosophies on key political issues. The event was well attended andprovided useful information to voters only few days before the election. Many attendeesfelt the information gave excellent insight into some of the core principles of the politicalparties and felt that it was a great asset around election time. It also helped provide individuals with key information, which would prove helpful come time for any election, and also help any individual determine where they stand on the Political Spectrum. The style of the debate on Wednesday has been slightly altered from the format used in the last political debate to allow more interaction between the three groups.

The Debate Society recently held a debate between the three candidates for Student Government President for the 2011-2012 school year on March 9. The event was well attended and gave students an opportunity to interact with the candidates directly. Candidates had an opportunity to speak their minds about some important issues in the life of the university. It was beneficial to all who attended and added to the Debate Society’s repertoire of successful events.

The Debate Society will be hosting a series of debates through the year entitled “The Great Debates," tackling today’s issues and include debates between clubs, students and more. For more information, contact Mike LaRocco, president of the Debate Society, at laroccom2@scranton.edu. So get involved, come to Debate Society Events, and who knows, maybe you too can make a difference some day, no matter what kind of office it may be.

Tobacco Cessation Program Offered

Are you ready to quit using tobacco? Would you like help or do you need tobacco resources?

The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute is offering smoking cessation counseling for those who live or work in Lackawanna County and are interested in quitting tobacco use.

Counseling is available in one-on-one sessions or in groups from Cancer Institute Tobacco Outreach Coordinator, Stacey Velez. Velez is a certified addictions counselor who has worked in the Human Services field for 20 years. She has been trained in the “Freedom from Smoking Model,” and also received instruction from the Mayo Clinic in accordance with the “Clean Air For Healthy Children Act”.

Informational programs providing an introduction to quitting are available for businesses as well as on-site cessation counseling for employees.  Additional individual and Spanish services are also available through a partnership with the Leahy Clinic of The University of Scranton Leahy.

Cessation counseling programs are constantly forming.  Individuals or businesses interested in learning more about these programs or in signing up should contact the Cancer Institute at 570/941-7984 or e-mail velezs2@scranton.edu.

This program is offered with support from Tobacco Free Northeast PA and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Donate your Prom Dress to Cinderella's Closet

Have a formal or prom dress taking up valuable room in your closet? Donate it to Cinderella's Closet!

Sponsored by the Junior League of Scranton, Cinderella’s Closet is an annual event scheduled on Thursday April 14, at the Scranton Cultural Center's Shopland Hall. The event helps high school girls have an opportunity to go to the prom in a dress of their choice and feel like the “belle of the ball” — all for less than $10.

With the cost of formal attire increasing, students and parents are likely to have difficulty affording this important night. The junior league believes students shouldn’t suffer the consequences of these growing prices.

Dresses should be of modern style, clean and in good condition — no 80s dresses please. Cinderella’s Closet also accepts formal footwear, jewelry and hair accessories. Bring back your dresses after Spring Break! Donations can be dropped off in The Community Outreach Office now through Friday, April 1. Our office is located in DeNaples Center, room 205B. For more information, contact Ellen Judge at judgee2@scranton.edu.
