Foursquare at The University of Scranton - Have You Checked In?
Foursquare is one of the fastest growing location-based social networks on campuses across the country. We join our sister institutions such as Marquette, Loyola University New Orleans, Saint Joseph's University and the University of San Francisco, as well as notable colleges like Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, Boston University and Texas A&M, who have used this platform to increase engagement among current students, prospective students and alumni on their campuses.
As part of the Foursquare for Universities program, there are five campus badges our students can earn such as Campus Explorer, Campus Munchies, School Spirit, Bookworm and Quad Squatter. They can also compete for bragging rights as Mayor of campus venues – competition is already fierce for the DeNaples Center and the Weinberg Memorial Library!
By using Foursquare on our campus, we can encourage students to explore the campus and participate in campus events and student-run activities, as well communicate campus traditions and historical facts about the University to students and visitors to our campus. Groups like Admissions, Athletics and Dining Services can utilize Foursquare to enhance the college experience for students, professors, staff and campus visitors.
In the coming weeks we will be releasing information about a Foursquare promotion on campus that will take place after spring break – stay tuned for more details on Scranton's Foursquare Frenzy! In the meantime, follow the University on foursquare so that you don't miss any of our tips!

Scranton Garners Four Advertising Awards
The Twenty-Sixth Annual Educational Advertising Awards, sponsored by the Higher Education Marketing Report, recently announced its list of winners, with The University of Scranton garnering four accolades.
The University received three silver awards in the categories of newsletter (Spring 2010 issue of Challenges in Theory & Practice), website (Admissions), and video viewbook ("Location" video). The Admissions website and its subpages highlight the University's location, Jesuit tradition, honors program and student life. The location video is also located on the Admissions website.
Scranton's spring 2010 image campaign and print ads earned a bronze award in the newspaper advertisement/series category. The campaign ran in three consecutive issues of The Chronicle of Higher Education, starting on Feb. 26, 2010. The advertisments focused on national recognition/academics, sustainability, and campus improvements, with one ad devoted entirely to the new unified science center.

Women and History in NEPA Conference Saturday
Linda Shopes, associate fellow in history at Dickinson College, and faculty member at the Oral History Institute at Columbia University, will deliver the keynote address. Affiliated as a historian with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission for 17 years, Shopes has overseen the development of programs and research initiatives that have made, and continue to make, a significant contribution to our understanding of state history.
The conference begins at 9 a.m. on March 5 with a welcome and opening remarks by Dr. Dunn. Morning presentations will include “Suffrage in Wilkes-Barre, 1913-1915” by Susan Gilroy-King, adjunct faculty member of Luzerne County Community College; “The Visiting Nurse Association of Scranton” by Marian Farrell, Ph.D., professor of nursing at The University of Scranton; “Lady Poets of The Century Club of Scranton” by Gemma Williams, a 2009 graduate of The University of Scranton; and “Art in Early 20th-Century Scranton” by Dr. Dunn.
A buffet luncheon, presented in 1920s style to honor the enactment of the 19th Amendment, will take place at noon, preceded by Shopes’s keynote address.
Topics to be presented during the afternoon include “Mary Liberatore of the Clayton-Liberatore Gallery, NYC” by Darlene Miller-Lanning, Ph.D., director of the Hope Horn Gallery at The University of Scranton; and “Miss Jennie Brownscombe, Artist” by Sally Talaga, director of the Wayne County Historical Society.
The conference concludes at 3 p.m. with a reception in the University’s Hope Horn Gallery on the fourth floor of Hyland Hall, Jefferson Avenue and Linden Street. Conference participants will view the paintings of Jennie Brownscombe and receive a complimentary catalog of the exhibit.
For additional information, call (570) 941-4016. The lectures are free and open to the public and do not require reservations. There is a $10 fee to attend the luncheon, which requires a reservation. The luncheon reservation deadline is Tuesday, March 1.

Donate your Prom Dress to Cinderella's Closet
Sponsored by the Junior League of Scranton, Cinderella’s Closet is an annual event scheduled on Thursday April 14, at the Scranton Cultural Center's Shopland Hall. The event helps high school girls have an opportunity to go to the prom in a dress of their choice and feel like the “belle of the ball” — all for less than $10.
With the cost of formal attire increasing, students and parents are likely to have difficulty affording this important night. The junior league believes students shouldn’t suffer the consequences of these growing prices.
Dresses should be of modern style, clean and in good condition — no 80s dresses please. Cinderella’s Closet also accepts formal footwear, jewelry and hair accessories. Bring back your dresses after Spring Break! Donations can be dropped off in The Community Outreach Office now through Friday, April 1. Our office is located in DeNaples Center, room 205B. For more information, contact Ellen Judge at judgee2@scranton.edu.
