Royal Review (Feb. 14-20)

Here is a weekly wrap-up of University of Scranton athletic events. To see the full Royal Review release, visit http://matrix.scranton.edu/athletics/gnfeb212011.shtml.

Men’s Basketball (18-5 Overall/11-3 Landmark Conference)

Behind clutch 3-point shooting from senior guard Zach Ashworth (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) and junior forward Matt Swaback (Kingston/Wyoming Seminary), the Royals held off upset-minded Moravian College, 77-74, in the Landmark Conference regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Long Center.

Ashworth finished with a game-high 28 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field and Swaback had 10 points, a career-high seven assists, three rebounds and two blocks as Scranton overcame a five-point deficit with less than four minutes remaining to avoid squandering a 15-point halftime lead.

Ashworth buried back-to-back 3-pointers to erase a 70-65 deficit and Swaback made a 3-pointer at the top of the key with less than a minute remaining to give the Royals the lead for good, 75-72.  Senior guard Luke Hawk (Audubon/Methacton) finished with 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field.

Ashworth’s 28 points moved him into sixth place on the Royals’ all-time scoring list with 1,719 points.

Women’s Basketball (18-6 Overall/12-2 Landmark Conference)
Senior guard Colleen McLane’s (Scranton/Scranton Preparatory) only two baskets of the game came at a critical time to lift the Lady Royals to a 64-56 victory over Moravian College in the Landmark Conference regular-season finale on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Long Center.

McLane hit back-to-back 3-point field goal attempts late in the second half to extend a four-point lead to an eight-point margin as Scranton battled back from a four-point halftime deficit to sweep the regular-season series from the Lady Greyhounds.  Senior guard Megan Kopecki (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) finished with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, senior guard Jennifer King (Taylor/Riverside) contributed 13 points, and sophomore forward Tayler Pallotta (Dunmore/Dunmore) had 10 points and 10 rebounds, her second ‘double-double’ in points and rebounds of her career.

Prior to tipoff, Kopecki was presented with the 17th annual Dr. Harold Davis Award as the Lady Royals’ most valuable senior.

Wrestling (4-8)
The Royals traveled to New York City on Saturday, Feb. 19, and dropped matches to Morrisville State, 29-12, and New York University, 39-9.

Senior Steve Glickman (Pennsauken, N.J./Holy Cross-Delran) and freshman Chris Silakoski (Trenton, N.J./Notre Dame) posted wins for the Royals in their match against Morrisville State. Glickman recorded a 1-0 decision over Antonio Hernandez at 165 and Silkoski posted a 3-1 decision in overtime against Joseph Rodriguez at 184. Glickman’s win was his third of the season and the 12th of his career while Silakoski earned his 11th win of the season.

Against New York University, the Royals picked up a forfeit win by freshman Joseph Buckman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./St. Peter’s Preparatory) at 157 and junior Matthew Terry (East Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) posted a 4-2 decision over Jakub Pawlowski at 174 for his 12th win of the year.
