2011 Shamrockin’ Eve Invitation for Graduating Seniors

Hey Class of 2011!  Make sure you save the date for one of the biggest events on campus! On Friday, March 11, the Alumni Society of The University of Scranton is hosting its third annual Shamrockin’ Eve! The event is for those only of the graduating class of 2011 and alumni from the past five graduating years. It is one big celebration to introduce you to the alumni family, while kicking off Parade Day Weekend! Save the date – March 11, 2011, featuring Blackthorn (a Celtic Rock band from Philadelphia) and, of course, YOU!

Weight Watchers: Is it for You?

Weight Watchers: is it for you? Attend our information session, scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 15, from noon to 12:45 p.m., in room 214 of the DeNaples Center, to find out about the new program. Open to students, staff and faculty.  

An eight-week session begins the following week on Tuesday, Feb 22, at the same time and same location.  Participants must register in advance at the introductory session by e-mailing mascellic2@scranton.edu or calling 941-4550. It is $80 for the session and is payable at the first class by cash, credit card or check made payable to Weight Watchers. There is a 15-person minimum for group to continue.

Pilgrimage to Baseball Hall of Fame April 2

The Office of University Ministries is hosting a retreat to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Saturday, April 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. All students welcome. Registration opened Monday, Feb. 14. $25 is due at time of registration. Last Call for Study In Florence Summer Program

Dr. Picchietti and Dr. Caporale's yearly Study in Florence Summer Program still has a few openings available. The program will run from May 28 to June 25. Students will live in Florence, Italy, for a month, take classes (3 or 6 credits) and visit many exciting sites. Deadline registration has been extended until Friday, Feb. 25. Economics Honor Society Accepting Applications

The International Economics Honor Society (ODE) is now accepting applications for membership from all students, both undergraduate and graduate. Criteria include a minimum of 12 credit hours of economics courses. The ODE induction dinner will be held on Monday, April 4, 2011, in Brennan Hall 509. The speaker this year is R. Glenn Hubbard, dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. You can request information about ODE or an application from Dr. Hong V. Nguyen through e-mail (nguyen@scranton.edu). The Dating Game is Scheduled Friday

The Dating Game, sponsored by the Residence Hall Association, is on campus Friday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. in the DeNaples theater (fourth floor). Come see who gets the "Final Rose!" Busy Student Retreat Scheduled

The Busy Student Retreat will take place Sunday, Feb. 27, through Thursday, March 3, and is tailored to meet each student's schedule. This on-campus retreat is designed for students who wish to deepen their relationship with God in the midst of everyday living. Students commit to a period of prayer/reflection each day and a daily meeting (Monday through Thursday) with a spiritual director (arranged according to your schedule) to discuss where God's grace has been present. Hello Home Workshop Set for Feb. 18

If you are an international student or a returning study abroad student, the "Hello Home!" workshop is for you! This workshop, scheduled Friday, Feb. 18, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., will assist you with integrating your experience in the United States or abroad, with life in your own country. Be a Royal Nights Host

The Admissions Office needs hosts for the upcoming Royal Nights program. Royal Nights allows accepted high school seniors to experience life as a Scranton student, and get the feel of our campus community.

The Royal Nights students will arrive on a Sunday between 3 - 4:30 p.m. and participate in planned activities that evening. They will stay overnight with a student host, and on Monday, they will attend classes and depart late in the afternoon. We are looking for current students who live on campus to host the Royal Nights guests in their rooms. Hosts meet students when they arrive on Sunday afternoon, have the option to participate in the different activities that evening, provide sleeping space, and help the Royal Night students checkout on Monday afternoon.

Please consider this opportunity to show your Scranton pride. Plus, you will receive two free movie tickets for each weekend you host!

AICUP Offers 'Good Citizen' Scholarship

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) is accepting applications for its Commonwealth “Good Citizen” Scholarship.

Who is eligible: This scholarship is open to all full-time undergraduate students attending one of AICUP’s 85 institutions, who has an extraordinary commitment to community service and who has demonstrated creativity in shaping his/her volunteer activities.

How to apply: Application forms are available at the Financial Aid Office. Return completed applications to your financial aid office for submission to AICUP. Please note that students should not send applications directly to AICUP – they will not be accepted.

Deadline to apply: All applications must be returned to your Financial Aid Office for submission to AICUP by March 31, 2011.

Sanofi Pasteur Scholarship/Internship Program

Resume should include overall cumulative GPA and anticipated graduation date.  The cover letter should highlight the candidate’s perspective concerning how they can be meaningful contributors to the program and the company. In addition, candidates must demonstrate leadership and experience working in a team-based environment.  Cover letter should not exceed one page.  Deadline for submission is Friday, February 25, 2011.

All applicants must meet the following criteria in order to receive consideration for the award:
  • Full-time enrollment for the current 2011 Spring Semester
  • Minimum of rising junior status (finished sophomore year) and will not graduate during course of internship
  • Major in chemistry or biological sciences
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and demonstrated team work
  • Must be available for a minimum of 10 continuous weeks (40 hours per week) during the summer months
  • Must have permanent US work authorization
  • Scholarship/internship is primarily merit based, however financial need of candidates will be considered

VaxServe Scholarship/Internship Program

Graybar Scholarship Seeking Recommendations

Recommendations for the 2011-2012 Peter S. Graybar Memorial Scholarship are being solicited. The scholarship will provide assistance for students entering their junior year next fall. Recommendation forms and information sheets are available at: http://matrix.scranton.edu/docs/graybar_scholarship.doc or at the Financial Aid Office – 401 St. Thomas Hall. The deadline is March 31, 2011.

McLean Scholarship for Nursing, Physician Assistant Majors Now Available

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) is offering the McLean Scholarship for Nursing and Physician Assistant Majors.

Who is eligible: This scholarship is open to all full-time undergraduate students attending one of AICUP’s 84 institutions who are enrolled in a Nursing or Physician’s Assistant program. The student must also have at least a 3.0 GPA. Candidates should also be campus leaders and community volunteers.

How to apply: Application forms are available at the Financial Aid Office. Return completed applications to your Financial Aid Office for submission to AICUP.

Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation Offers Scholarships

Once again the Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation is offering 10 scholarships to students who live within their marketing area. Eight of these scholarships are for graduating high school seniors planning on attending college as fully matriculated students for the fall 2011 semester.

The Junior College Transfer Scholarship is for a graduate or graduating student of a community college or junior college, transferring to a four-year college or university, as a junior, starting the fall 2011 semester.

The Graduate or Professional School scholarship is for graduating college senior or returning student who is planning on attending graduate school as a fully matriculated, first-year graduate student for the fall 2011 semester.

The application procedures and criteria for each of the described online at www.pricechopper.com, under Community Events. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, March 15.

AHCHRS Offers Scholarship Opportunity

The Appalachian Health Care Human Resources Society (AHCHRS), an organization comprised of more than 100 Human Resources professionals from the Central Pennsylvania region, is once again offering scholarships to individuals majoring in Human Resources or a related field. This scholarship is established in memory of Dean Stultz and Samuel Griggs, former members of the Society. The scholarship is for $2,000.

Eligible Applicants:
  • A Human Resources major or a Business major with a minor in Human Resource Management/Administration
  • A undergraduate student in their Junior or Senior year or a Graduate degree student.
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university located within Pennsylvania.
