Carolyn Forché to Speak Wednesday

There are several upcoming spring events sponsored by the Education for Justice Program, including a lecture by Carolyn Forché entitled "The Voice of Witness" on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Title: The Voice of Witness
Content: She will discuss ways in which warfare, imprisonment, and other forms of suffering are given voice by writers around the world.

Speaker: Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi (learn more here)
Date: Thursday, Mar. 31, 2011
Time: 7 p.m.
Place: The DeNaples Center, 407 B/C
Title: Keynote Address on the eve of the Annual Education for Justice Teach-In Day
Content: He will address issues of peace and reconciliation.

Gandhi will also run a workshop on the Teach-In Day:

Time: 9  - 10:30 a.m.
Place: The DeNaples Center, 405
Content: Leading a nonviolent and conciliatory life.

Royal Ball Scheduled Feb. 25

The USPB's Royal Ball: Arabian Nights is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 25, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center. Philosophy Cafe Scheduled Feb. 22

Phi Sigma Tau (the Philosophy Honor Society) is hosting a "Philosophy Cafe" on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m., at Northern Light Espresso Bar (536 Spruce Street). Dr. Andrew LaZella will present on "The Problem of Universals," with a short discussion to follow. The event is free. Free coffee, tea, and desserts will be provided. All are welcome. University Players to Present 'Speech & Debate'

The University Players will present "Speech & Debate" by Stephen Karam, and directed by Bob E. Gasper, Feb. 25-27 and March 4-6. 

Imagine "Glee" meets "The Crucible" as a starting point for this hilarious, thoughtful and entertaining look at coming of age in uncertain times. Three teenagers navigating the treacherous waters of youth form the basis of this recent offering by Scranton-native Stephen Karam (columbinus) who even gives a shout-out to some local institutions in the script. “One of the top ten plays of the year ... Even if you’re not fluent in IM, you’ll LOL at this subversive comedy ...” Entertainment Weekly. This play is for mature audiences.

Performance times: Fridays and Saturday at 8 p.m.; Sundays at 2 p.m.

Alpha Sigma Nu Alumni Club Lenten Afternoon of Reflection

Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society, Alumni Club is sponsoring its sixth annual Lenten Afternoon of Reflection on Saturday, March 5, beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the DeNaples Center, room 405, and concluding with liturgy at 4 p.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel (fulfills Sunday obligation). The theme is “Reflections for Lent” with a talk by Fr. Timothy Cadigan, S.J., and time for private prayer. All are welcome to attend to get a good start on the Lenten season. Tournees French Film Festival Schedule Now Available

The Tournees French Film Festival, presented by the University's World Language and Cultures Department, will show several feature films in early March. Blood Drive Scheduled Today

Interested in Skiing at Sno Mountain?

Students, staff and faculty can ski at Sno Mountain on Wednesdays for a reduced price. Tickets are for 5 to 10 p.m. each Wednesday and can be purchased in the Rec. Office each Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cost for a lift ticket is $18. To include ski or a snowboard rental the cost is $25. All rentals include a lesson. Transportation is on your own.

Senior Army Officer to Visit Campus in February

The Department of Military Science is proud to announce that on Friday, Feb. 25, through Sunday, Feb. 27, it will host Colonel Reese Turner, the U.S. Army Human Resources Command Division Chief for Maneuver, Fires and Effects. Colonel Turner is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and is currently stationed at Fort Knox, Ky.

Colonel Turner will kick off his visit to Scranton by speaking to the campus community at a luncheon entitled “21st Century Leadership” on Friday, Feb. 25, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Collegiate Hall, Redington Hall. Later that afternoon Colonel Turner will conduct a "Leader Professional Development" seminar with Junior and Senior Cadets in the Military Science Program. The seminar will allow Cadets the opportunity to seek guidance and discuss career and professional development paths, assignments and career management. On Saturday evening, the Royal Warrior Battalion will conduct its annual Military Ball at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Scranton where Colonel Turner will serve as the guest speaker.

As a part of The University’s special programming in honor of Black History Month, the Department of Military Science, the Office of Equity and Diversity and the Office of Multicultural Affairs invite all students, faculty and staff to the presentation and luncheon on Friday, Feb. 25. Come to the IT Forum on Thursday, Feb., 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Brennan Hall, room 509, and learn how to best organize your e-mail, how to archive old e-mails to access later and some new tips and tricks for handling and your e-mail.
