Royal Review

Here is a weekly wrap-up of University of Scranton athletic events during the period of Monday, Dec. 13, through Sunday, Dec. 19. To see the full link to the Royal Review, http://matrix.scranton.edu/athletics/gndec202010.shtml.

Men's Basketball (6-2 Overall/1-0 Landmark Conference)
The Royals extended their season-long winning streak to four by defeating Kean University and Cabrini College during the period.

Senior guard Luke Hawk (Audubon/Methacton) exploded for a career-high 31 points, including 20 in the second half, as Scranton held off a late rally to defeat Kean, 94-90, on Monday, Dec. 13, at Hargrove Arena in Union, N.J.

Senior guard Zach Ashworth (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) and sophomore guard Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) each recorded 'double-doubles' in points and rebounds—becoming the first duo in Royas' history to accomplish this feat since Brian O'Donnell (28 points, 11 rebounds) and Bill Burke (12 points, 13 rebounds) against Delaware Valley College on Jan. 28, 2004, at the Long Center. Ashworth finished with 25 points and career-high 10 rebounds and Farrell had 25 points and 11 rebounds.

On Wednesday, Dec. 15, in their final game before the holiday break, Hawk, Ashworth and Farrell combined for 63 points and 23 rebounds as the Royals erased a one-point halftime deficit to defeat Cabrini, 77-64, at the Long Center. Hawk finished with 23 points and seven rebounds, Farrell added 20 points and nine boards, and Ashworth scored 18 points—all in the second half—and pulled down seven rebounds for Scranton, which out-scored the Cavaliers, 19-9, in the final six minutes of play.

Women's Basketball (6-2 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The Lady Royals returned to action for the first time since Dec. 4 against Cabrini College, coached by former Scranton standout point-guard Kate (Pierangeli) Pearson on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the Long Center.

Senior guards Jennifer King (Taylor/Riverside) and Colleen McLane (Scranton/Scranton Preparatory) combined for 27 points as Scranton jumped out to a 37-16 halftime lead and cruised to a 63-39 victory.  The Lady Royals also received a season-high 10 points from senior forward Courtney Roselle (Cedar Grove, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) and nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals from senior guard Megan Kopecki (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional).

On Saturday, Dec. 18, the Lady Royals held off a late rally after building up an 18-point second-half lead to defeat cross-town rival Marywood University, 65-54, at the Insalaco Arena.

Kopecki scored 15 of her season-high tying 21 points in the second half and King and junior forward Sarah Gage (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury) added 10 points apiece for Scranton, which watched its lead shrink to seven with 2:12 remaining.  Kopecki then converted a traditional 3-point play and McLane knocked down a pair of free throws after a steal by sophomore forward Tayler Pallotta (Dunmore/Dunmore) to end the Pacers' hopes off pulling off the come-from-behind victory.

This week's two wins extended Scranton's season-long winning streak to five.
