Men’s Basketball (3-2 Overall/1-0 Landmark Conference)
In their only game of the week, the Royals broke away from a one-point halftime lead to defeat Moravian College, 62-43, in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Johnston Hall in Bethlehem.
Senior guard Zach Ashworth (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) scored a season-high 24 points by connecting on 8 of 14 shots from the field and sophomore guard Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) added 12 points as the Royals snapped a two-game losing streak.
Buoyed by a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Tim Lavelle (Clarks Green/Scranton Preparatory) and four steals on the defensive end of the court, Scranton went on a 12-0 run midway through the second half to extend a three-point margin into a comfortable 15-point lead.
Women’s Basketball (4-2 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
Senior guard Jennifer King (Taylor/Riverside) played an instrumental role in leading the Lady Royals to two victories during the period.
On Wednesday, Dec. 1, she finished with 13 points, including two clutch baskets in the final three minutes of play, as Scranton defeated previously unbeaten Stevens Institute of Technology, 55-49, at the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. Junior forward Sarah Gage (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury), who finished with eight points and six rebounds, connected on back-to-back baskets late in the second half to break a 45-45 tie and give the Lady Royals the lead for good.
Scranton also received 10 points apiece from senior guards Colleen McLane (Scranton/Scranton Preparatory) and Megan Kopecki (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional).
On Saturday, Dec. 4, King scored 16 points, including 14 in the first half, as the Lady Royals avenged its loss in the 2010 Landmark Conference championship game to Moravian College, 69-42, at Johnston Hall in Bethlehem. King connected on four 3-point field goals in the nine minutes of play as Scranton jumped out to a 25-13 lead en route to a commanding 22-point cushion by intermission.
Kopecki finished with 15 points, including 13 in the first half, as the Lady Royals won their third straight game.
Men’s Swimming (3-3)
Junior Paul Vignati (West Simsbury, Conn./Northwest Catholic) won two individual events and swam the anchor leg on the first-place finishing 200 freestyle relay to power the Royals past Marywood University, 101-53, on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Long Center.
Vignati won the 100 (:50.94) and 200 (1:53.05) freestyle as the Royals returned to action for the first time since November 21. Scranton also received first-place finishes from junior Joseph Clifford (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) in the 1000 free (10:56.79), sophomore Andrew Urban (Ambler/Lansdale Catholic) in the 50 free (:22.39), and freshmen Adrian Silva (Valley Stream, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan) in the 100 fly (:55.35) and John Hughes (Lancaster/Lancaster Catholic) in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.38).
Joining Vignati on the 200 freestyle, which covered the distance in 1:43.93, were Urban, Clifford and junior David Hovey (Forty Fort/Wyoming Valley West). Scranton opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay, as sophomore Christian Tierney (Sussex, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), Hughes, Silva and Urban finished in a time of 1:43.93.
Hovey also recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the 50 (:23.38) and 100 (:52.01) free, while senior Joseph Costello (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph’s) and sophomore Nathan Wynosky (Schnecksville/Parkland) placed second in the 1000 free (11:11.61) and 200 free (1:54.00), respectively.
Women’s Swimming (5-2)
Junior Carolyn Gillespie (New Market, Md./Linganore) won the 50 free (:25.01) and 100 fly (1:01.58) to lead the Royals past Marywood University, 112-78, on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Byron Center.
Gillespie also swam the anchor leg on the 200 freestyle relay that finished first in 1:42.33. She was joined on the 200 free relay by first-year swimmers Sara Franciscovich (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson), Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) and Jessica Merino (N. Hyde Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan).
The Royals opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay, as junior Christine Gorge (Harleysville/Lansdale Catholic), seniors Amie Leonard (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) and Brittany Reyes (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), and sophomore Victoria Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) covered the distance in 1:57.32.
Scranton also received first-place finishes from junior Jillian McGowan (Port Chester, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) in the 200 free (2:09.82), Reyes in the 200 individual medley (time unavailable), Franciscovich in the 100 free (:57.69), Gorge in the 100 back (1:06.28), and Leonard in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.54).
Placing second in their respective events tonight were sophomore Colleen Logan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in the 1000 free (11:37.13), first-year swimmers Emily Gombosi (Cogan Station/Montoursville Area) in the 100 fly (1:07.72) and Colleen McMahon (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) in the 100 free (1:01.85), sophomore Maggie Beyer (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) in the 100 back (1:07.75), and McGowan in the 500 free (5:43.79).
Wrestling (3-3)
The wrestling team did not compete during the period.
