Men’s Basketball (2-0 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
The Royals defeated Arcadia University, 81-53, and Centenary College, 77-65, to win the season-opening Radisson Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20, at the Long Center. It was Scranton’s third title in the tournament’s nine-year history and its first since 2005.
On Friday evening against Arcadia, senior guard Zach Ashworth (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) scored a game-high 21 points and junior guard Dan Hilferty (Ardmore/Episcopal Academy) and sophomore guard Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) added 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Royals connected on 8 of 10 3-point field goal attempts (80 percent) in the second half alone to break away from a 37-30 halftime lead.
In the championship game Saturday afternoon against Centenary, Ashworth scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as Scranton erased a four-point halftime deficit. For his efforts, he was named the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP). Joining him on the all-tournament team was junior forward Matt Swaback (Kingston/Wyoming Seminary), who scored a career-high 17 points against Centenary, while Farrell finished with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and senior guard Luke Hawk (Audubon/Methacton) had 16 points and six assists.
Women’s Basketball (1-2 Overall/0-0 Landmark Conference)
Behind a 15-point, 6-rebound, 6-steal effort from senior guard Megan Kopecki (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional), the Lady Royals tipped off their 2010-2011 season with a 58-46 victory over Montclair State on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Long Center.
