Funds Available for Development of Credit-Bearing International Courses

The Office of International Programs and Services (IPS) has allocated funds in the form of the IPS Grant for the Development of Credit-Bearing International Courses to support the efforts of full-time, tenure-line faculty members to develop such courses. The grant will provide a faculty stipend of $1,000 and up to $2,000 for airfare and other travel expenses related to setting up a faculty-led international course. Up to five grants will be awarded. The stipend will be awarded in two payments of $500. The first payment will be made following attendance at the mandatory workshop, the second payment following submission of the final report.

Those interested in applying for a grant should submit a formal proposal for a new program, with evidence of sustained departmental and, if applicable, a proposal for an institutional memorandum of understanding with a partner institution(s) in the country to be visited, to the Office of the Provost by Friday, Nov. 19, 2011. For more information, contact Steven Jones, associate provost for civic engagement and academic mission, at ext. 7520 or joness21@scranton.edu.

Information Resources Implementing CNAC Changes

In a continuing effort to enhance our services and increase our information security posture, Information Resources will be implementing changes to the Cisco Network Access Control (CNAC) system. The CNAC system, which was recently deployed campus-wide to staff and faculty machines, helps us validate that only authorized users are able to access network resources (Banner, Internet, etc). Additionally, CNAC will help us monitor the "health" (up-to-date patches, operating systems, etc) of the desktops that are connecting to our network.

During the deployment of CNAC, end-users were prompted by the CNAC agent to enter their University username and password once, thereafter allowing them to gain access to network resources. All end-users will be required to re-authenticate to the network via the CNAC client on a monthly basis. This will initially occur on Wednesday, Nov. 10. End-users should expect to enter their University username and password into the CNAC agent before gaining access to network resources. This process will allow us to continually assess the validity and health of our computing environment. The CNAC re-authentication process will routinely occur on the second Wednesday of each month beginning in January 2011.

Additional information can be found in the announcements section of the my.scranton portal. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we implement these changes. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Technology Support Center at 570-941-HELP or at techsupport@scranton.edu.

CMS User Group Seminars Scheduled

The Office of Public Relations will be hosting two CMS User Group seminars to assist faculty and staff with maintaining their department websites and refreshing their content.

Writing for the Web
Grabbing and keeping the interest of visitors to your website is just one of the many tips you will receive at the Writing for the Web seminar. This seminar will be held on Friday, Nov. 19, from noon - 1:30 p.m., in the fifth-floor boardroom of Brennan Hall.

Learn how to write content for your visitors that is concise, informative and entice them to stick around.

If you would be interested in getting some tips specific to your website, you can submit a request for it to be reviewed at the meeting. Our staff will provide some suggestions for optimizing your content for the web. First-come, first-served, so submit your request no later than Monday, Nov. 15, to Valarie Clark (clarkv4@scranton.edu)

A light lunch will be served. Register by Nov, 15 for this event by contacting Kate Breuninger (breuningerk2@scranton.edu).

Ask the Developer
If you have wanted the chance to sit with a developer and get your CMS and website questions answered, this is the perfect opportunity!

Join us in this hands-on seminar on Tuesday, Nov. 16, from noon - 1:30 p.m to refresh your memory about common tasks in the CMS, learn tips and tricks that can save you time and aggravation, and attract potential students with search engine optimization (SEO). The seminar will be held in the computer lab on the third floor of the Weinberg Memorial Library.

Send your questions to Sarah Johnson (johnsons4@scranton.edu) to have them addressed during the presentation.

If you have attended at least one CMS training session, register for this event by contacting Kate Breuninger (breuningerk2@scranton.edu). Space is limited to the first 22 registrants. A light lunch will be served.
