Men’s Cross-Country
Behind all-conference performances by juniors Jason Bohenek (Jessup/Holy Cross-Bishop O’Hara) and Patrick Casterline (Bridgewater, N.J/Bridgewater Raritan), the Royals finished fourth in the eight-team field at the 2010 Landmark Conference championships held at Goucher College in Towson, Md., on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Bohenek covered the 6000-meter course in 27:48.50 to finish 10th overall, while Casterline was 14th in 28:10.60.

Women’s Cross-Country
Susquehanna University spoiled the women’s cross-country team’s bid to repeat as Landmark Conference champions on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Goucher College in Towson, Md.

The Crusaders placed three runners in the top 10 to regain bragging rights in the conference and win their third title in four seasons with 51 points. Scranton finished second with 74 points.

Sophomore Kathleen Druther (Clarks Summit/Scranton Preparatory) and senior Maria Cifone (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph Hill) earned all-conference honors for the second straight season. Druther, the 2009 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year, placed fourth in a time of 23:43.80 over a 6000-meter course to earn first-team honors, while Cifone garnered second-team honors with an 11th-place finish in 24:30.10.

Field Hockey (7-12 Overall/2-5 Landmark Conference)
The Royals bounced back from a 2-1 loss in overtime to Vassar College on Tuesday, Oct. 26, by defeating backyard neighbor Keystone College, 2-0, on Thursday, Oct. 28, and Goucher College, 2-1 in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 30.

First-year forward Caitlin Liberatore (Ambler/Mt. St. Joseph Academy) scored her second goal of the season in the 62nd minute against Vassar to even the score at 1-1, but the Brewers pulled it out in the seventh minute of the extra stanza on a breakaway goal by Emily Maier.

Against Keystone, Scranton’s defense shut down the Giants, limited them to just five shots on goal, and the Royals received goals from junior forward Alicia Tamboia (Wingdale, N.Y./Dover) and senior forward Tara Winter (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) to snap a seven-game losing skid.

Momentum from Thursday’s victory carried over to Saturday, where Scranton overcame a 1-0 deficit behind goals by sophomore Corrine O’Kane (Springfield/Springfield) in the 51st minute and senior forward Kaitlyn Tirney (Springfield/Springfield) in the second minute of the overtime period. Tirney’s goal was her team-leading seventh of the season and the 18th of her career.  She ends her career as the 19th all-time leading scorer in Scranton history with 45 total points (18 goals, nine assists).
