Contemporary Latino/a Performance: An Evening with Caridad Svich
The Department of English and Theatre, Department of World Languages and Culture and the Office of Equity and Diversity will present “Contemporary Latino/a Theater: An Evening with Caridad Svich" on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Studio Theatre on the first floor of the McDade Center for Literary and Performing Arts (CLP 104).
Svich’s presentation will include a reading of her work by University of Scranton students. This visit is made possible by a grant from the Office of Equity and Diversity and was arranged by faculty from the Department of English and Theatre and the Department of World Languages and Culture.
Svich is a force to be reckoned with in contemporary theater in the United States. She is a U.S. Latina playwright, translator, lyricist and editor, whose works have been presented across the country and abroad at diverse venues including Repertorio Español, The Women’s Project, INTAR, 59East59, Cincinnati Playhouse, McCarren Park Pool, 7 Stages, Salvage Vanguard Theatre, ARTheater-Cologne and Edinburgh Fringe Festival/UK. Among her key plays are 12 Ophelias, Any Place But Here, Alchemy of Desire/Dead-Man's Blues, Fugitive Pieces, Iphigenia...a rave fable, Instructions for Breathing, and the multimedia collaboration The Booth Variations. Svich has been shortlisted three times for the PEN Award in Drama, is a former Radcliffe Institute Fellow at Harvard University, and has received grants from NEA, TCG, Pew Charitable Trust and California Arts Council.
She's edited several books on theatre and performance including "Trans-Global Readings: Crossing Theatrical Boundaries" (Manchester University Press), "Divine Fire" (BackStage Books) and "Out of the Fringe" (TCG Publications). She is currently working on new play A Little Story and In the Time of the Butterflies (based on the novel by Julia Alvarez). She has translated nearly all of Federico Garcia Lorca’s plays and 13 of his poems, as well as works by Lope de Vega, Calderon de la Barca, Julio Cortazar and new plays from Spain, Cuba, Catalonia and Mexico, and has freely adapted works by Sophocles, Euripides and Shakespeare. Svich also founded the pan-American theatre collective NoPassport, is contributing editor of TheatreForum, and on the advisory committee of Contemporary Theatre Review (Routledge/UK).
