Flu Shots Available Today and Thursday

Influenza Immunization (flu shots) will be available to students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, Oct. 19, and Thursday, Oct. 21., in the Wellness Center Classroom (Mulberry & No. Webster) from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The cost is $20, payable by cash, check or Royal Card. No appointment is needed. Royal Cards are required.

Conference Addresses Suicide Among African-American Teens and Adults today

Please join the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) and the Counseling Center for a free web conference on suicide among African-American teens and adults, a discussion for people in a position to help, on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Brennan Hall, room 500. Light refreshments will be served. University Reading Series Presents Author Wednesday

The University Reading Series presents author and poet Judith Nichols for a mixed genre reading of poetry and short stories on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. in the DeNaples Center, room 405. The event is free and open to the public.

Silly Bandz Come to Scranton!

The University of Scranton Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization is bringing Silly Bandz to campus. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get your personalized Scranton “S” Silly Band in tie-dye purple and black!

The sale times and locations are:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Midnight Madness in the John Long Center. Royal Cards are accepted to purchase bracelets
  • Thursday, Oct. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on first floor DeNaples. CASH ONLY.
  • Friday, Oct. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on first floor DeNaples. CASH ONLY.

Each Silly Band is only $2 and 100 percent of the proceeds will be sent to El Salvador to assist poverty-stricken women in the creation of various business models, including chicken production and agricultural retail operations. Discussion Titled 'Women and the Supreme Court' Set for Friday

"Women and the Supreme Court," a talk by Marcia Greenberger, founder and co-president of the National Women's Law Center in Washington, D.C., will be held Friday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. in Brennan Hall, room 509. Th event is co-sponsored by the Women's Studies Program in the Department of Latin American Studies and Women's Studies (LA/W/S) and the Department of Political Science. SIFE Hosts Fundraising Events in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) will be accepting donations to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Wednesday, Oct. 20, Friday, Oct. 22, Monday, Oct. 25, Tuesday, Oct. 26, and Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the DeNaples Student Center, first floor.

With this $1 donation, students will be entered into a raffle to win a $70 VISA gift card and will receive a pink "Imagine Life without Breast Cancer" bracelet.

On Wednesday, Oct. 27, SIFE will sponsor a day full of Breast Cancer Awareness Activities. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a “Thinking Pink Rally” will take place in the DeNaples Student Center, first floor. During this time, students, faculty and staff can make donations, receive Breast Cancer Awareness information and enjoy pink cupcakes!

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., SIFE will host a “Party in Pink” in The Byron Recreational Center. Get a pink manicure from Emprise Beauty School representatives for making a $5 or more donation. No appointments are necessary.

From 1 to 2 p.m., certified Zumba instructor Kim Loyden will host a “Thinking Pink” Zumba Workout Lesson in the Byron Recreational Center.

Donations will be accepted throughout the day, at all events, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. For more information, contact Jenn King at kingj4@scranton.edu.

Author Presents Talk on Archobishop Romero Oct. 28

Dr. Damian Zynda will present a summary of her recently published book with a talk entitled “Archbishop Romero: Disciple, Martyr, Model of Conversion” on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Rose Room on the fifth floor of Brennan Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.

Asian Tradition Discussion Scheduled Today

Midnight Madness Pep Rally Slated for Oct. 27

It’s time for midnight madness, the official school pep rally to honor fall sports teams and kick-off the winter sports season! It is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 10 p.m. in the Long Center. Doors will open at 9:30 p.m.

Come celebrate “Midnight Madness” featuring The University of Scranton fall and winter sports teams including the basketball teams, the swim team, the wrestling team, the soccer teams, the Scranton dance team, The University of Scranton cheerleaders and Urban Beats.

All students must bring a canned good for admittance into the event.

Committee on the Status of Women's Open Forum Nov. 11

The Committee on the Status of Women will host an Open Forum on Thursday, Nov. 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Heritage Room of the library. The important topic to be discussed is "Status of the Campus." Donald Bergmann, director of Public Safety/University Police Chief, will be the speaker. Lunch will be provided, but you must respond by Friday, Nov. 5, to Dr. Marian Farrell, chair of the committee, at farrellm1@scranton.edu.

League of Women Voters Announces Upcoming Debates

The League of Women Voters of Lackawanna County and Keystone College will host a debate for the candidates for the 114th Legislative District on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in Evans Hall on the campus of Keystone College. Sid Michaels Kavulich (Dem.) and Dan Naylor (Rep.) are vying for the seat that is now held by Rep. Jim Wansacz. The district covers a large geographic region including parts of Lackawanna, Luzerne and Wyoming counties.

Ken Smith (Dem.), incumbent representative in the 112th Legislative District will debate challenger Lee Morgan (Rep.) on Monday, Oct. 25. The boundaries of this district cover part of Scranton and all of Dunmore, Moscow, Clifton, Covington, Elmhurst, Madison, Roaring Brook and Thornhurst. This event will be co-hosted by the Political Science Department of The University of Scranton, and will be held in the University’s Pearn Auditorium in Brennan Hall on Madison Avenue beginning at 7 p.m.

The debate for incumbent representative Kevin Murphy (Dem.) and opponent Mike LaPolla (Rep.) in the 113th Legislative District will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The 113th district serves residents in parts of Scranton, Moosic and Taylor and all of South Abington Township, Clarks Green and Throop. This event will be co-hosted by the Political Science Department of The University of Scranton, and will be held in the University’s Pearn Auditorium in Brennan Hall on Madison Avenue beginning at 7 p.m.

IT Matters — Fall 2010 Edition

The newest edition of IT Matters, a newsletter focused on the developments and activities of the Information Resources Division, is now available. With rapid changes, we realize that there is a need to create an ongoing method of keeping our community up to date. IT Matters will provide our faculty, staff and students with information on current applications, planned changes to technologies and new initiatives.
