CTLE Faculty Advancement Series

There are a handful of events scheduled through the CTLE Faculty Advancement Series in the upcoming weeks, including:

“Teaching to Promote Self-Regulated Learning”
Wednesday, Oct. 20, form 2:30 - 4 p.m. in St. Thomas Hall, room 590
Dr. Linda Nilson (Clemson University)

Self-regulated learning is the metacognitive skill and practice of strategically planning, monitoring, and evaluating one's learning — a key study habit that few students know about. Many studies tell us that instructors can improve their students’ exam performance, written and designed products, and problem-solving skills by incorporating into their courses even one or two of the many forms of self-regulated learning activities. These modest additions also reduce the overconfidence that many students feel about their mastery of the material and their ability to apply it.

After this workshop, you will be able to design and integrate proven self-regulated learning assignments and activities into your courses. You can choose from among those designed for specific times during the term (beginning, middle, and end) and those connected to lectures, readings, problem sets, papers, projects, quizzes and exams. Refreshments will be provided.

Health Care Reform Update from Human Resources

How will Health Care Reform Legislation affect me and the benefit plans at The University of Scranton? President Obama signed into law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (HR 3590), on March 23, 2010, and the Health Care and Education Affordability Act (HR 4872), on March 30, 2010.

The law takes effect for the benefit plans at The University of Scranton on January 1, 2011.

The purpose of the information below is to provide the highlights and effective dates for major provisions of the Health Care Reform Legislation, based on the most recent preliminary information.  We highly recommend that you review all materials distributed to you announcing the Annual Open Enrollment period.  In some cases, a response from you to exercise your rights under the new Health Care Reform Legislation may be necessary.

The Legislation includes the following major provisions for January 1, 2011:

Medical, Prescription, Dental, and Vision Benefit Plans

  • Requires insurers to cover adult children under their parent’s plan to the end of the month they turn age 26. This requirement does not apply to the spouse of an adult child or the child(ren) of an adult child.
  • Requires insurers to provide coverage for preventive services as defined by Health and Human Services (HHS) without copayments for participating providers.
  • Prohibits insurers from imposing lifetime dollar limits on essential health benefits as defined by Health and Human Services (HHS) and annual dollar limits on durable medical equipment, orthotics and prosthetics.
  • Prohibits insurers from imposing an increased coinsurance or copayment requirement for emergency care services rendered by a non-participating provider. Member may be balance billed for the difference between the non-participating provider’s charges and the reimbursed amount.
  • Prohibits insurers from denying coverage to children (under the age of 19) who have pre-existing conditions.
  • Prohibits insurers from rescinding policies to avoid paying medical bills when a person becomes ill unless the member engaged in fraud or intentionally misrepresented a material fact under the terms of the benefit plan.
  • Primary Care Physician—Obstetrics/Gynecology Services – Members will be allowed to select a primary care physician and females will have the opportunity to self-refer to an Obstetrics/Gynecology specialist provider.

Medical Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medications will require a prescription to be reimbursable under a Medical Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

In the very near future, you will receive the Annual Open Enrollment materials, including necessary paperwork to add adult children per the provision noted above, the schedule for on-campus informational meetings and required legal notices.  Please be sure to review all materials and take appropriate action, if applicable, to comply with the Annual Open Enrollment deadlines.

We will keep you informed of important developments relative to the Health Care Reform Legislation as additional interpretations are published.  You may also want to review information on the Health Care Reform Legislation yourself.
