Summer Study Abroad in France

Dr. Linda Ledford-Miller of the Department of World Languages and Cultures is pleased to announce the first annual Summer Study Abroad in Pontlevoy, France. This academic program will run from May 28 to June 18, 2011. Students will enroll in courses and live in the Abbey of Pontlevoy (built in 1034), just two hours by train from Paris. The program will also include two day trips in the beautiful Loire Valley, known for its numerous grand chateaus, and a weekend in Paris. Students must be in good standing at The University of Scranton. Those interested are invited to attend either one of the first informational meetings, scheduled Friday, Oct. 22, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in O'Hara Hall, room 306, and Monday, Oct. 25, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Hyland Hall, room 301. Trip to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon Saturday

Join us and hike the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon on Saturday, Oct. 16. The bus leaves at 10 a.m. and returns at approximately 7:30 p.m. The cost is $10. Don't miss this chance to see one of state's neatest attractions! Water Polo Tournament Set for Sunday

There is a water polo tournament scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Byron Recreation Complex's pool. Teams of seven should sign up in the Recreation Office before on Thursday, Oct. 14, before 3 p.m. There is no fee. Call the Recreation Office at 941-6203 or e-mail Johnsonj1@scranton for more information.

Scholarship Opportunities for Female Students

In keeping with its long-standing tradition of helping women succeed, the Talbots Charitable Foundation is proud to present the 2011 Talbots Scholarship Foundation and the Nancy Talbot Scholarship Award for perseverance and ingenuity, which is presented in memory of the founder of Talbots. This program empowers women to enrich themselves through learning and achieve a college education later in life. 

Completely re-imagined, the Talbots Scholarship Foundation will award $180,000 in college scholarships for the 2011 academic year, including up to ten (10) $15,000 scholarships and one (1) $30,000 scholarship to an extraordinary finalist demonstrating courage, conviction and an insatiable entrepreneurial spirit.

Eligibility
Applicants to the 2010 Talbots Scholarship Foundation must:
  • Be women currently residing in the United States or Canada;
  • Be women who have earned a high school diploma or their GED on or before September 2001;
  • Be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full- or part-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university
  • Be attending the full 2011-12 academic year and receiving a degree no earlier than May 2012; and
  • Have at least two semesters (24 credit hours or more) remaining to complete an undergraduate degree as of the beginning of the 2011 fall academic term.

The BrainTrack Computer Science Degree Scholarship Accepts Applications

The BrainTrack Computer Science Degree Scholarship is designed to help others considering computer science or information technology related careers by taking advantage of the experiences of entrants. Here is a summary: 

  • Selection Criteria:  Winners are selected based on the creativity, focus, overall thoughtfulness, accuracy and practical value of responses to essay questions. The questions ask students about how they chose computer science or IT, their experiences as a student, and their suggestions for prospective students. BrainTrack publishes the most helpful responses for use by future students. 
  • Awards: The best entry for each competition is awarded $1000; the runner-up $500.  
  • Deadlines:  Scholarship competitions run twice a year, for each semester. Submission deadlines are March 1 and November 1, with the next deadlines being Nov. 1, 2010 and March 1, 2011.    
  • Costs:  None. 
  • Privacy:  All entrant names and contact information will be kept private for use only in the scholarship, except for the winners whose names will be published. 
  • Requirements:  Entrants must be currently taking classes in an appropriate computer science or IT degree program with at least one semester of studies completed.  Studies can be full-time, part-time, on-campus, or online and must be at an accredited U.S. college.

Three-Day Silent Ignatian Retreat Scheduled Nov. 12-14

A three-day silent Ignatian retreat will be held Friday, Nov. 12, through Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Retreat Center at Chapman Lake. This is an opportunity for students to find God's grace through the gift of silence.Applications are available through Wednesday, Nov. 3. IEEE Club Hosts Meeting Thursday

Come and join the IEEE Club for a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., in St. Thomas Hall, room 292. This week's guest speaker is John Victor, who will be speaking about research and innovation in the medical industry. Free pizza and soda will be provided. Everyone is welcome.

The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a club that provides students with the opportunity not only to participate in a campus wide event in the form of an IEEE seminar series (presentations by distinguished scientists, community business leaders, as well as our alumni and various employers/prospective job companies), but also as a time and place to pursue the club agenda, professional development and networking.

Philosophy Café Scheduled Thursday

Phi Sigma Tau, the Philosophy Honor Society, will be hosting its first Philosophy Café of the year on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. at Northern Light Espresso Bar in downtown Scranton. The topic of the cafe will be "Woman and the Body Politic of the Family: A Comparative Analysis of Zhu Xi's Ontological Dynamism and Aristotle's Metaphysical Essentialism,” presented by Dr. Ann Pang-White. Come to Northern Light (536 Spruce Street) for great discussion and free coffee, tea, and pastries. Are you interested in studying abroad? Well, it’s not too late. The deadline for applications for spring 2011 is Friday, Oct. 15.  

Have questions about studying abroad? We have answers! Please stop by the Study Abroad office in St. Thomas Hall, room 508, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and talk to our global ambassadors. We have students who have studied abroad in various countries including Australia, England, Ireland, China, Italy and many more who are willing to answer any questions you may have.

On Wednesday, Oct. 13, Colleen Calvey from Loyola University will be here representing the John Felice Rome Center. She will be located in the DeNaples Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to answer any questions you might have.

15 Minutes to $500 or an iPad

Check your e-mail – you might have a chance to win an iPad or $500! More than 800 students have been randomly selected to participate in the Scranton Smartphone Survey, part of a Weinberg Memorial Library research project examining how students use their mobile phones. Students who complete the 10-15 minute survey will have the opportunity to enter a prize drawing, and one lucky student will win his or her choice of an iPad, a $500 Best Buy gift card, or a $500 Apple Store gift card.

The Scranton Smartphone Survey will be available from Monday, Sept. 27 through Friday, Oct. 15. Any questions about the survey may be directed to Digital Services Librarian Kristen Yarmey at yarmeyk2@scranton.edu.

Fasula Scholarship Deadline Approaching

Applications are now being accepted for the 2010-2011 Neal J. Fasula Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship criteria is as follows:
  • Employee or is a dependent of an employee of the Gerrity’s Supermarkets
  • Full-time undergraduate of The University of Scranton
  • Submission of the 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Applications available in the Financial Aid Office, St Thomas Hall, Suite 410
The scholarship deadline is Friday, Oct. 15.

Interested in a Spring Break Service Trip?

Dranginis Scholarship's Deadline Friday

The Adam and Ann Dranginis Scholarship is now accepting applications. The scholarship criteria is as follows:
  • Available to University of Scranton students of Lithuanian ancestry who meet the University’s scholarship criteria (minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA).
  • Award is renewable provided the recipient continues to meet the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements.
  • Eligible applicants must submit a written request explaining their line of ancestry.
  • Applications should be submitted to Mrs. Mirtha Wilczynski, Financial Aid Office, St Thomas Hall, Suite 401.
The deadline is Friday, Oct. 15.
