Downtown Scranton Alive with Art on First Fridays
Several of the University’s student organizations were represented at the monthly art walk, including the Photography Club, Urban Beats, Men and Women for Octaves and new singing group Royal Harmony.
Photography Club president Oscar Solis, a senior, believes that First Friday is a great opportunity for Scranton students to get involved in the community.
“We’re really fortunate to have a venue so close to campus for kids to have their talent recognized by so many members of the community,” Solis said.
The Photography Club explored the art of interpretation at its exhibit of the year, titled “Hermeneutics,” shown at GreenBeing on Adams Avenue. The display featured many photographs by new members, as well as the work of veteran photographers.
Men and Women for Octaves performed songs such as “Blackbird” and an upbeat cover of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Your’s” to an overflowing crowd at Northern Light Espresso Bar and Anthology Books. Following the Men and Woman for Octaves, Royal Harmony, an all-female a capella group, preformed for the first time.
The Urban Beats dance team performed at The Vintage Theater on Penn Avenue and The Hope Horn Gallery hosted a gallery reception for the “Variations: Photographs by Carl Backlund” exhibit.
Scranton Tomorrow’s Special Projects Coordinator and University of Scranton student, Megan Byers, noticed an increase in the amount of students not only performing but also participating in First Friday this month.
“It’s so great to see students taking advantage of downtown and we hope to see a consistent increase in participation in the future,” Byers said.
First Friday is organized by Scranton Tomorrow and takes place on the first Friday of every month. For more information on future events or to register to participate, visit www.firstfridayscranton.com.
